Lighting suggestions... anywhere I'm going wrong?

Looks great. Video quality is awesome.

Lighting suggestions?? yeah, you're too hot with the key light, and lacking a bit in the shadows. I understand (and enjoy) the high contrast lighting, but you're a little too hot there. The left side of the dude's face was blown out through the "story" scene's.

I have to say great job. I'm usually pretty tired of seeing the standard performance shots mixed with a slight narrative. Your editing is tight. Fast cuts can be annoying and sometimes a cop out, but I thought you did a really good job at keeping a fast pace without becoming annoying.

I'd have to watch on a TV to say anything about the lighting. So hard to really tell on a monitor watching a tiny picture.

Did you have the band play to a slowed down version of the song, and speed it back up? it looks like there is more going on than just the faster shutter.

thanks for the comments.. still trying to even out the lighting.. I always find it hard in small spaces, maybe I just need more diffusion gells etc.. But I find it much easier if I can just move the lights further away.

As for speed.. the band were pretty enthusiastic and the shutter speed took care of the look for most of it. For the middle section we had them play along to a version of the song twice as fast and we shot in 60i or whatever then slowed 50% in post. We did that for most of the girl footage too.

Thanks!

This video is brilliant, considering you shot it in a day, im really impressed, agreeing with earlier comments, it is a tightly cut video but doesnt irritate and you have composed the shots really well. The lighting is great, however, lighting is a creative medium that allows you to experiment so how you light it is totally up to you, there is no set way to light a scene, apart from continuity which has to be monitored when lighting for different angles. My preference would have been to try out some subtle colour correcting, maybe warm up the skin tones and play with the gamma, but again, this is a personal preference.

Good luck with future projects, i look forward to seeing other things that you produce!

Also, just a polite request, please could you post the link for your video in the 'Music Videos: Post Them Here!' Thread that i have set up in this area as i think it would really help other people in finding your video in the future.

Many thanks

Today i watched this video a few more times and realised i really love the band who are playing on this video! What area are they based in? Have they performed any gigs around London?

I would love to hear any other tracks they have, they have a really great sound.

Looking forward to your reply...

dave, thanks for the comments.. the band is second monday... www.secondmonday.net the video isn't meant to be available yet so dont let them know you've seen it haha.

Have you got any stuff online.. always good to hear from DVX users in England.

I'll post the vid in the other section as soon as the band make it available online.

Cheers for the comments... talk to you later

beno great clip mate. I didnt mind the hotspot on the shot of the actor. The band lighting was a little flat IMO.

Your shots were great, this is a great example of how people can use their shutter speeds to great effect.

Awesome.

Liked the song also being a big fan of brit rock, finally in the last few years its coming back with a vengeance globally.

OK one thing that did bother me was the aspect ratio. But I think thats a personal preference. 2:35 looks great on beautiful big wide shots. But as your framing was tight (nicely) I just felt a little crammed in.

good job i really enjoyed the video alot and i dont like that type of music at all. I like the camera work alot. Like stated already i did really like how a lot f the shots were not as quick as the generaly are in most music videos. Great job

hey beno

its always great to speak to people from the UK, and seeing fresh new talent from the unsigned british band scene is cool

i do have little bits i have worked on but its mostly just adverts and similar things ive just done for fun. if i ever do get round to organising a website for my stuff i will let you know

many thanks for mentioning about posting the video in the other section, i understand you dont want to let the video spread round before the band give it the all clear so whenever is a good time for you to place the video in the other thread is fine

thanks a lot... we used arri 1 x 1k and 3 x 650. Not really enough room for them in the tiny room but what can ya do.

cheers for the comments,

wow, cant wait for their new album to come out. Good video. As previously stated, the lighting is a bit harsh at times.

BTW, You have a great site and repitoir!

Great job, Beno. I liked the saturation of colors. What did you use to color grade? I also liked the use of shutter. Was that the stock DVX lens? I liked the poloroid shot a lot. Great work, man.

Also, did you shoot the slo-mo in 60i?

yep all slo mo in 60i.... we used the DVX stock lens. Just got an M2 but I can't get it to work right for the life of me!

we used a bit of magic bullet to boost the contrast :P

Just out of curiosity, did you shoot the rest of the video using 24pa? I haven't mixed slow mo 29.97 footage with 23.98 yet, but I would assume you would need to convert the slowed down footage to 23.98 using reverse telescene. Is this correct?

I'm in the UK so I'm using 25P so I'm not sure I can answer your question... all I did was slow the footage down to 50% and then de interlace it... should be the same for you I think?

I think it is similar here, but the framerate might glitch a little bit. It is weird watching 24pa footage on a standard NTSC timebase. I use a LOT of effects from www.detonationfilms.com (amazing) and some of them are 29.97 NTSC, but I need 23.98 (24pa) so I have to export it as a Quicktime in Final Cut and import it into Cinema Tools, where it lets you reverse telescene for 100% smooth playback in my DVX footage timeline. Pretty cool stuff.

All technical bollix aside, your video is awesome. Did I properly use bollix there? Hahah.
