Music Video-Fighting Chance

Looked good, really like the shots of the singer half lit. I did notice a frame of black towards the end of the video. Not sure if that was intentional or not. Good job.

Hey Slimothy- just finished watching your video. You can tell that a lot of work was put into it. How many days did you shoot? Looks like a little bit of Magic Bullet was used to green it up. I liked the overall look and feel of it (as far as colors and shots go), but this was another one of those music videos where it was 1,000 times better with the audio turned down.

The music was ok by me, and that's the one part of the vid you can't change. It was reminiscent (or derivative, if you're a pessimist) of U2's War era, and that didn't do badly. As for the video, I like the scenes, both of band and actors, but found the development of the acted segments to be the weakest point of the video --nothing happens unexpected, and it could use more action and less walking. In the scale of my opinion of professional music videos, it rates an A for photgraphic quality but a B- for holding interest and accruing interest in the song. Finding new boy-meets-girl or girl-dumps-boy content for music videos is definitely a challenge, but that's where I see room for improvement. You could start with her working in the bar and go from there...the prep in her home doesn't tell anything. I thought she was getting ready for a date.

Thanks alot guys for taking the time to comment.

Kormickster: We shot 2 days for the band and 1 1/2 days for the storyline. Budget was about $100 (cab and hotel) and I didn't use any Magic Bullet (I never do.) I'm glad you liked the colors.

Bherr: I know what you mean as far as storyline being kinda boring and predictable. It's actually not a story of boy meets girl, as the man dressed in black is actually a metaphor for failure. Always hovering over her waiting to engulf her. I told the band that I didn't think people would totally get that part, but we agreed that we were fine with people drawing their own conclusions. Thanks so much for watching it and commenting.

This was my first completed MV, and I had a blast doing it.

Tim.

Pretty good. This definitely looks like WAY more than a $100.00 video! I really like how the outdoor scenes came out. How did you get that look. How did you light the night exteriors?

I agree though that there was a little too much walking. I like the band scenes but think the storyline could be a little more interesting. I actually liked the open endedness of the man in black following her around.

For a first vid, great job. For a $100.00 first vid, phenomenal :)

Thanks alot Alex. The outdoor scenes were filmed at the magical hour, and then I used Vegas to colorgrade/correct. You can't really tell, but there were about 60-70 MPH winds where we were shooting the outdoor scenes. I had to stand way back where there was a wall (to protect from the wind) and zoom in just to keep the camera semi-still.

I'll post some before-after grabs so you can see what I did w/ the color grading.

The night scenes were actually lit w/ a little Frezzi micro fill on camera light, although I didn't have it mounted on camera. I had people hold it in different positions. It's the one you see here: www.frezzi.com.

It actually worked out pretty well.

Tim.

Cool Video. I, for one, liked the song. Big Ska/Punk fan... and they seem heavily influenced by that. I just dig that this is a time where more exposure than ever can be given to peoples work.

I watched again with the failure theme in mind. I may be a cretin, but it still doesn't connect for me. I don't see how she's established as being beset by failure to start with. It's a lot to ask for a 5 minute reel. Regardless, I'm thorougly impressed with this being a first music video and even the hint of a theme or message is a plus, pehaps something for the viewer to puzzle about.

We tried to make the impression of her being a failure w/ the fact that she's kinda living out of a motel, working at a shitty bar. That coupled w/ the lyrical theme of trying to make it on your own. I don't blame you for not getting it though, as I figured it would be a hard sell w/ what we had to work with.

Thanks alot for watching it and giving your input, I really appreciate it.

Cool Tim. Nice clip. I actually liked the song. Not sure its been mentioned but at the end I was wondering: whats the relationship with the girl and the guy following her around?

Anyway I liked the overall feel. Felt you you may have been a little cautious on some of your shots. Zooms were a little slow for the pace etc. Couple of shots seemed kind of flat - e.g. when she was walking the street to the bar and getting in the taxi whih could be due to the color grading done in post. .. anyway mate GREAT JOB!
