How to make you're self digitally on fire?

Well we found out soap napalm works well (a kid around the neighborhood made a bunch and almost got arrested, so he gave us what he had left). Just have a way to fasten cold, wet towels or ice under the persons clothes. Later, we wanted fire directly on the skin, so we couldn't use napalm (irritates/burns the skin). We started experimenting with rubbing alcohol. It didn't work well (flame was blue). Then, we started using different types of spray deodorants. All brand name sprays caused flames to be blue or mostly blue.

We ended up using some off brand stuff (the flame was usually red/orange). The problem with this is it has to be put out in about 5 seconds (the person we used is a pyro...he sets himself on fire constantly).

So yes, to those who doubted napalm, it works. Just remember to be safe with it. I can probably post some footage if we get more gasoline (or if we can convince the person to make more) and if we can get the other kid to agree to light himself again (though I'm not sure if he'll play with fire again after baking his testis with spray fire). We made sure there was very little gasoline compared to soap, and started out with a small spoonfull, and gradually increased (color was good and it lasted quite a while compared to the spray). We made sure everything was safe before we tried anything dangerous (started out small, used ice first, stepped down to wet towels so there wouldn't be a buldge, etc).

The spray clips will be posted around mid september/october when the project is complete.

i remember seeing a clip of some kids trying that stuff out and the kid that got lit up had like 4 sweaters on and they had a fire estinguisher. They lit the guy and he went up like a torch. The fire estinguisher didnt have enough in it to put him out and he got 3rd degree burns on most of his body and someone caught it all on tape. Probably can find it on rotton.com.. Its not too smart to play with fire and chemicals and not have professionals who know what they are doing. yeah, you might get away with it a few times but its the one time you dont that will change someone life forever.

Didn't see this thread but I posted under DVX footage a clip with a guy and his head on fire. Used Combustion 3...just learning it so it might be a little....um....fake looking. Oh well...I'll keep trying.

Anyone can be considered a professional when it comes to things like this. The guys on Jackass are cosidered "professionals" (using 4 sweaters was a bad idea in the first place)

Basically, those kids obviously did something stupid. heavy planning and heavy focus on experimentation are required. I didn't just jump into this by pouring a gallon of gas on some kid and yelling "light 'em up." the most we did was pour a very light amount on the kid (a very small spoonful is enough to light up a whole arm). A little (even a small dab) goes an incredibly way. I realize this. It is safe when heavily supervised, and in my case it was. We had fire extinguishers and large wet towels (smother flame) to use first. Water was ready as a last resort. We even made sure not to use extremely flammable materials as the clothing (as far as clothing material goes). I did my homework. I did my experimentation. I did more than many "professionals" do. If my research and experimentation wasn't enough, this person that agreed to be set on fire does this as a hobby. I could have dropped a few thousand to have a "professional" do this, or I could do the same job (or even better) for free. And how is anyone supposed to become a pro without trying it out? Research only goes so far, and I've done mine.

I realize people are concerned of the safety of what I'm doing, but we've got this under control. If anyone else tells me to "leave it to the professionals" i'll feel like i'm getting flammed (Not really....but I couldn't resist).

I like how you isolated one sentence from my entire explanation. I was stressing how easy it is to be considered a "professional." Read the rest and you'll understand.

A bottle of rubbing alcohol, a lighter and a crazy friend who's willing to participate (that's how we did it anyway).

No, seriously, this works.

Just make sure they have clothing on and put it on the clothing. It only burns the rubbing alcohol, and then have your actor stop drop and roll. It's pretty sweet.

But for something as intense as all over the body or something, is there a fire effects CGI package out the somewhere?

Check this thread, which leads to this video.
Not really the best idea.
