Hello

I was looking into buyin a dvx100b (maybe off of newegg) and I was wondering if you could list off some must haves for the camera and where I might find these for a good price. Ya know like head cleaners, MiniDv tapes, case, tripod...stuff like that. Thanks

I recall seeing another thread on this subject in the past but anyways heres my informal list...

Panasonic MQ tapes
Pelican hard case with customizable foam insert
Tripod with a fluid head. Bogan 503 will do.
DVXuser batteries... i bought two. Comes with a nice teeshirt.
Filters UV and Polarizer
A good set of microphones (shotgun, lav etc.)
Boom pole
Mattebox
Redrock micro m2 adapter with rails and plate
Redrock follow focus
secondary LCD monitor

Probably don't need a head cleaner. There's a sticky on maintenance and it's recommended to manually clean your camera rather than use a cleaning tape.

Well if we're just talking immediate camera kit, then a set of legs with a good head on 'em, a hard case for the camera, and some extra long-life batteries would be first on my list. Problably also a lens cleaning kit.

You dont wannt save too much when you're buying a tripod. It'll suck if your 3000 dollar camera gets screwed just because you place it on a lousy tripod. I have a bogen 501 head. Its silky smooth, faux liquid.

I second Malcomong!

It's not just a saftey thing though. The smoothness of the head for pans and tilts is really important. I was using "loaner" equipment from the community TV station I'm a member of and it was so bad that I halted the project because of it.

If you aren't going to move the head ever while shooting it's different deal, but then that takes all the fun out of it.

If your shooting with a dvx find a way to get a decent head at the minimium.

I have the 503 Bogen head and I'm pretty happy. But I just recently used a sachler head and man it was like butter. So smooth.

Damn I have been using a satchler Cine 75 Hd lately costs more than a Canon XL h1 about $9000 USD..... wish I could have it in my own line up :( Im using a Libec LS55. I also have an LS22 much cheaper (see if you can find it) great for the trains in Tokyo where everything get banged up.... I did use a 503 head a few weeks ago and must admit I was not impressed.... the ls55 performs much better IMHO but costs a little more. But hmm for $200.... Maybe I would try to find a second hand set of sturdy sticks and see if I couldnt pick up a Bogen head second hand also.

If you plan on using some of the bigger adapters like the m2 I'd say stick to a bigger head than the 503. I bought my tripod like 2 months ago but I think i might need to upgrade already as i feel as though the 503 is struggling to hold up my camera.

If you can find a secondhand sachtler for a good price, and in good condition... Go for that... Best damn tripods known to man...

on the tripod, check out the Davis & Sanford at B&H you'll like 'em and the price is really good. Great gear too . . HD but inexpensive.

Which model Satchler would be good? Can you also leave a link to it.

Also, which mics are best (wireless and shotgun)?

Also, wide angle lens adapter?

I'm gathering a whole list of things because I'm about to make the jump soon:

DVX
Tripod
Wide Angle Lens
Mics
Bag
Lighting kit

Here's my list, it mainly centers around maintaining your lense/camera:

B+W super multi coat UV filter
Camel hair lens brush
Rosco lens paper
Pancro, or ultra clarity lense cleaner (available at filmtools.com)
Chamois eye pad (also at filmtools)
Hurricane blower bulb (safer than canned air)

All of this stuff can be had for under 100 bucks total, and will help prolong the life/performance of your camera.....

sachtler kicks A#%&*!!!
I love it love it love it - but cost is about 4 times higher than manfrotto.......it's just worth every cent though - so sad :-(
alternative....... that is the "I don't have a million bucks to blow" question.

Any one have a believable alternative? (If quality is the main aim)

Erm...Manfrotto? I think you answered your own question there. Drameddie - I don't think a wide angle lens is essential unless you're looking for an anamorphic converter. However you need to spend lots of cash to get a good one thats free from barrel distortion, and the cash from that would be better spent on a good mic and or a lighting kit
