New redrock and DVX tests w/GIRLS!

I figure I gotta make this interesting some how....it is kinda my sister, but uhhhh whatever works I guess?

I did some more tests today after adjusting the ground glass back and forth for about 20 minutes trying to get the infinite focus right. I think I'm getting somewhere now, but the only problem I'm having is with the grain...it seems like a little too much...not sure what I'm doing wrong though.

Anyways, check it out.

I'm taking the link out because I don't want my bandwith to die!

I like it a lot. It's amazing how these adapters are changing the way video cameras work.

Adapter? What adapters?

Was this shot in 24p or 30p?

Chris

PS: I thought the compression looked kind of heavy.

Exploiting your own sister. Gotta love it.

Footage looks good/OK. I haven't played with any adapters yet, but it must be difficult to get it down, huh? A few people seem to pull off great shots, while the majority seem to have troubles. Practice, I guess?

I think I'm going to try and do some real tests with the sharpness level and master pedestal. I have a stange feeling that my infinite focus isn't just right and so sharpening it is getting it sharp, but also bringing out the grain as well.

I'm not sure though, I'm still waiting for some comments from someone at the redrock forums as well.

Edit: Eh, everyone over there says it looks great, better than theirs even...I'll still do the tests, but I guess this is probably as close as I'm going to get.

nice work... cute. ;) any comments about the graininess? i, too, am having that problem.

I used more lights and shot with the detail +5 V Detail +5 Detail coring +7
24P with the M2

this is 1000 watts right next to my face and the camera has the ND filter on.

Read's Jack's post to me about how to get past the graininess:

you need more light and to crank your master ped way down
you'll get less noise and still have the shadows roll off into black

Most people say shoot as wide open as you can so that you are getting as much light as possible into the camera to minimize noise.

Some say you always want to shoot with aperature around 4 or 5 because that is the sweet spot for the leica lens for maximum sharpness.

But its best to use more light and throw on the ND filters if you have to and crank the master ped down. In post experiment with crushing the blacks further using proc amp or bleach bypass or color corrector or brightness contrast bezier.

Also since you forgot to white balance you have a lot red. Red is the most artifacty and noisey color for the DVX and does not render well in NTSC (or film) so that is adding noise to your original footage as well.

Look at the back wall and you will see the noise is identical. When you are applying the filter it's just correcting a littel for the under exposed image and you can see the noise more in the skin tone.

that last grab looked amazing... any colour correction there... would you be kind enough to post the raw image straight from the camera? I'm waiting for my M2.. have been for 5 weeks! grrrr :)

I mean is it just me or does it seem like sharpening in camera for this sorta thing is a bad idea? This is just because if you sharpen it in camera, it'll get your image sharp, but at the same time bring out all the grain along with it. But if you really nail the focus and then sharpen in post, the grain won't be accentuated as much by it and you'll get your image much sharper as well. Is my logic flawed or what?

I dunno..more tests I guess.

I noticed on the sides the focus really fell away when she moved to them... especially bottom left from camera POV...almost like a blur... Is this your lense causing that? I cut a part of the image to focus on it a little more:

In my experiences, this could be the condenser (maybe zoom DV cam in more) or it could be the GG moving a hair along the Z axis.

Here is the Raw Image without CC.
And after that is CC (Magic Bullet 2-Echo Blue Filter). See previous grab in the last page to see my detail settings.

thanks for that msconce, very very helpful... what lens did you use for that shot and when you say crank MPED down..do you mean all the way or just to -7 or something?

Grab looks awesome both ways.

i hope when i get my adapter I don't have to do much fiddling. Part of the reason why I decided to buy a proffessional adapter was because I got tired of fiddling with my DIY contraption.

You know, I think that may just be my camera not being alligned perfectly with the adapter. It's not the lens.
