My first music video - letus35/DVX100a

That video looked fantastic! Which version of the Letus was this shot with? Can you share what you did to get such a great image?

Tjohara99,
That was awesome. I agree about the song too. But the image and editing was superb. What lighting set up did you have? CC done in Vegas, right? What kinds of things did you tweak the most?

Oh... one more thing. I have a letus35a and I was wondering what kind of numbers you have on the zoom and focus in cam? Sorry about the FBI investigation but unlike the motor bike my replies are not built for just one question.

Very nice camera work, editing job, and story telling! Very amazing job for your first music video! Keep up the great work

Well, you're first music video is better than some people's 10th attempt at it -- seriously, great job!

Respect, you did a good job there!
One thing I didn´t like: the CUs of the singer.
Partly because of the camera angle, but that`s artistic choice.
Mostly because of her hair/make up and her performance.
I don´t know much about country music, maybe there is a "all natural" dogma or sth but she just looked to regular and dull in these important shots.
And for a womans CU I simply prefer an even, smooth skintone.
She also didn´t seem to feel too comfortable with these straight into the camera shots...
Maybe I only notice, because in the other shots (story) she looked great(eg the very last scene)!
But as usual, criticizing the finished product is soooo much easier than bringing it together in the first place...
Again, very nicely done!

Great job, my friend. Excellent first attempt. Absolutely excellent... I am wondering if this is really your first music video.

Kidding, of course. I agree with Spartacus about the CUs of the singer, but I am sure 99.9% of those watching the video would never question the shot. The only thing I really disliked was the song. Obviously you had no control, but I was ready to shoot myself in the face 15 seconds into it.

Good job, man. Good job.

I agree entirely.

Video was pretty amazing, song was torture.

And I also agree that the Closeups of the singer could have been changed. But other than that it was great.

CU's didn't bother me... even after I read the critisicms, they looked fine in my opinion. One thing that did bother me a bit (beside's the song), is the constant fade to blacks during the entire video (especially the beginning). I think it would have been more effective to lose a lot of the quick black fade's, and just go with a straight cut. Just my opinion...

Image quality looked great. CC also. Nice job.

I totally agree quick cuts look much better. Fade to black must be done in moderation or it's affect is dilluded a bit. Nice composition and camera moves though...good Job

Yeah... the fade to blacks are known to "disconnect the viewer from the film", and no one wants that ;) That's why you rarely see them in movies anymore. A few indie's still use them a bit, but it's rare to see.

that was so dope and i dont even like that type of music big props!!!! and thanks for that help the other day too!!

Wow ..if this is your first music video then you have a good future ahead of you . The lip syncing is a little bit off in the first few minutes and apart from that I really liked it - it made my day .
I liked the use of CC gave it a warm feel, shots were good also and the song was good and catchy .
- Great job overall !!!

Two questions
=================
1) There is one shot of them lying on the grass with the camera looking dowm on them and the camera seems to rotate ? How is that shot done ? Are you using a crane with a fluid head mounted on the end or are you using an electronic Pan head ?

2) How did you film the shot of them riding on the motorcycle with the camera looking at them from the side ?
were you filming from a moving vehicle or was the bike on a trailer ?

Too much of the singing head shots. It was like her body was being censored out. Otherwise, fine effort!

Thanks for the replies and criticisms guys!

I'm not sure which version of the Letus it was, but it wasn't the flip. I had to use that magnet and everything. I rented it off of wmiller@csulb.edu on this board, and he could tell you how far in it was zoomed and focused. I can't remember the exact numbers.

For lighting, everything was natural except for the indoor scenes i used one light. I don't even know what kind it was, but i had to put the softbox on it. sorry i'm pretty dumb when it comes to specs and tech stuff. but the light really made a difference!

For post I did everything in Vegas 5. I used magic bullet a LOT! I used the "basic warm max" preset and then jacked with all the settings to get my own look.

as for the CU's and the Fades, I totally agree with you guys! I actually had an extremely hard time finding getting footage of the singer where she wasn't looking around nervously or squinting, etc...when I went back and watched it again, i realized how many fades there were and I hit myself in the head. haha

She wasn't the easiest person to work with, but that's probably just my fault as a director not knowing what the hell I'm doing. Hopefully next time around I'll be able to get exactly what I want and not have to settle for anything less. Rock on guys, I'm shooting a new video for a band I actually like next month. Maybe actually liking their song will make a huge difference!:)

#1- For that shot I made them lay down directly beneath me, I had my camera on the tripod and I pointed it straight down. To do that, I had to put one leg of the tripod all the way extended, and the two others as short as they could go. so it was more of a monopod i guess. then i just twisted the one leg to make it a circular rotation. probably not the best way to do it, but it worked.

#2- you got it right, i was in a truck riding along side them. I was leaning over the truck with one hand holding the dvx as low as possible.
