I plan to use the dolly on an uneven surface - a gym floor. What can I lay down to balance the movement?

I've been giving some thought to this same issue. I might suggest laying the PVC pipe on 2x4s notched lengthwise and then using blocks/apple boxes, wedges and a 4' level to level the track. This will also help prevent undue wear and tear on the pipe so you don't have to keep buying more everytime you scratch it up...or you could just sand those scratches out. You might also want to make half of both the 2x4s and PVC about a foot longer than the other half so that you can support the joins of the PVC properly. If you really wanted to go the extra mile you could bolt on rails width-wise on the underside of the 2x4s so that they'd fold like pro metal track (they'd be easier to set up and sturdier, though they'd also be longer and less easy to haul).

Just a notion I had the other day...

Glen,

Wow, i completely missed your PM somehow. I just looked for it now and saw it. Sorry i had not responded sooner. We recieved your order just before the weekend on Jul 20th, and 3 business days later it was shipped out early the next week on the 25th. It does seem slow for it not to be there yet, but given that it is an international order, they generally take more time just due to customs checks and all the regulatory things they have to go through. I checked the tracking for the package and its certanly still on its way and should be there soon :) . check your PM's as I have sent you a tracking number and link to where you can follow the package progress.

for the uneven floor you can shim your track any way that you want to. it would be best to use a rigid metal type track like pro cine track with shims if needed, or you could accomplish a smooth track as described above or similar.

Hi Neil.

I was wondering if i can buy more coupler for the pvc or metal pipe when i place my order. cause it's very hard to find. Your dolly surface are they ready to ship. I heard you were suposed to sell them. thank you

bigshinyspoon,

Sure. When your ready to order just send me a PM and ill let you know what the little extra cost would be based on how many extra couplers you would like. We only currently offer the items listed on the order page, but we are working on additional products. We do not have a precise release date for any of them as of yet.

..just dropping in a note here that our dolly handles have just been upgraded.
they are now about 20x stronger in the shaft, and at connection points, and at long last have a satin silver anodized surface which perfectly matches the wheel sets. the upgrade has added a little weight. some good stuffs :)

the kits do not ride curved track yet, as we have not really had much request for it yet.

Please add another (or you can always count me as another 100  ) to the number of requests. Do you have anything in mind about what the curved would be like already?

hey, the wheels look good in the picture, im getting very tempted... =) i just have a couple questions. 1.) this is only the wheels and their mounts, right? this isn't a dolly cart...? and 2.) this also isnt the track... im assuming. do you think you could give us tips on how to build the best track for these wheels? how to piece each track segment together? im having trouble with pvc because once each track segment meets... the dolly bumps and the shot is ruined! i, too, built my dolly out of rollerskate wheels... anyways, here is some footage of the track being tested, please tell me what you think:

thekyleman71,

you should read through some earlier sections of this thread to cover the track building, but yes these are just the wheel sets or handle, and do not include a dolly platform. the wheel sets and handle actually look ..and are better than the older picture on the order page. im trying to squeeze in time to update the pics when i can.

Cynic821,

yeah, we just got an unexpected but very considerable price break in materials that we jumped on so the change was a suprise to us as well for the handles.

Neil, do you have any pics of your product with the tripod mounted on he plate and an operator riding up there? Or is the platform only meant for a tripod but nobody to ride and operate at the same time?

you can pretty much ride as many people as you can fit around your tripod and equipment on a 32 wheel version, but any kit will easily ride one operator. i dont personally have any pictures., but the 4' kits make standard flatbed doorway track dollies.

..right now there is just the wheel trucks and the handle. there WILL be a full dolly kit when it is finalized and ready to ship.

While I was out of town my place took delivery of the wheels and handle from Neil and I couldn't be happier. I'm going down to Home Depot and cut some plywood, man. Woo hoo. Thanks for the PROMPT shipment and superb instructions, Neil! Having shot way too much stuff on makeshift dollies this is going to be very much a pleasure.

Just finished assembling my dolly. While I was at Home Depot I saw some pre-cut aluminum "L" pieces of trim that happened to be exactly four feet long. So I bought two (three bucks a piece) and put them on the sides of the plywood. I think it looks pretty tight with the trim:
