Nikon User Thread

Painting with light is the new challenge for this thread, but there is also the whole DVXUser challenge in another thread for anyone with any camera to enter. That is a portrait shot. Personally, I'm going to do both.

BTW: After adding up the votes I just want to say thank you for everyone who liked my entry, and while I don't think I deserved the top vote I do appreciate everyone who liked my submission. That really made my day and put a huge smile on my face.

Cast4shows... I'm not really feeling the water in that image and it sort of distracts me, but you have a great shot to start with and work from there. It really is a great image.

iposiniditos... That is just funky, original, and completely trippy. I like.

I think it is incredible what images people are continuing to come up with.

"That is a great image. I love the reflection and it just really works for me. Beautiful image.

I like that 35mm lens.

-Jeremy"

Thanks a lot Jeremy, i like this lense too! :)

"Ipo... I like that shot also... and here's a tip for any guys that read this... that is THE BEST stuff to put on... I have never met a girl yet that doesn't love it. That's all I use and it's the only stuff that ever gets a comment.

Ipo I guess you are a man of impeccable taste... now I kind of want to see a picture of your girlfriend...

Thanks a lot Matt for your kind words.
Btw, my girl doesn't love me at all when i close to her with my nikon in my hands, so it's kind of difficult :D :D

Are most of your shots with that lens?
teach me :) Mind telling us what you did/didnt do to your photo(s)?
I like your technique.

Maybe i'm the last person in the world that can teach photography techniques. :)
Although, i use these lenses:
Nikon 18-70mm (from the kit)
Nikon 24mm f2.0 AIS
Nikon 35mm f1.4 AIS
Nikon 50mm f1.2 AIS
Nikon 85mm f1.4 AIS

I have my D70s less than a month and it's my first digital reflex. Before that i shot with a zenit 12xp :) but not so much. 20-30 shots per year... From my little experience i see that is much easier to shoot with the kit lense, but i like more the results of my manual lenses. I love primes...
I usually play with these adjustments in PS: curves, levels, selective color (neutrals is the most important!).
If i have to say a trick (that works for me sometimes), this will be for sharpness. Filter > Unsharp Mask > Amount 500% and littleee amount of radius (about 0.2-0.4).

I agree. There seems to be a trendy kind of vingnette (i always spell that wrong) look lately (I've seen it on a lot of shows on the discovery channel and history channel) where only two opposite corners get the effect. I dunno if this is intentional in this photo, the result of lighting, something in post, or even here the result of the other corners being dark so it is hard to see, but the balanced NON-balance it can bring can really set a photo apart. This is a very good example of that.

Bloody well done.

Thanks so much Rapier!

I don't think that i deserve so kind words. Thanks a lot everyone!
:)

Walked around today, looking for something interesting to photograph.

Pretty boring day, but I like the colors on this one:

OK, well I don't know about anyone else but with this D80 about to come out there are a couple of details that are rumored that are seriously making me go ape $hit about this camera.

Ken Rockwell is reporting that you can get full metering with old MF lenses. That alone might make me go ahead and just say screw it and buy this camera the day it comes out. On top of that there is also this entire issue of the 10MP sensor.

Now it is being said that it is a combination of the D200 and D70s, but both of these cameras have more noise in the image when compared with the D50. Of course we're talking an entry level model compared with semi-pro lines, but at the same time that is a huge concern. I'm sure that the D80 will offer the overall commander features of the D70 so there is a huge saving, plus Ken Rockwell is reporting that the camera will only be $899 for the body only.

I am really tempted to go ahead and put my name down on the waiting list right now for this bad boy and just wait and see the first review before paying...

I love my D50 but if for $500 more I can make a huge move up in quality and features then all of a sudden I am in camera lust hell.

Just to let ya'll know, I posted a couple of lenses for sale in the marketplace, here.

Is this shameless cross posting promotion? Yeah, it is, but I thought since I have a couple of Nikon lenses up for sale someone here might be interested.

I'm a bad person, advertising a sale in the marketplace, now I feel guilty, but I'm still going to hit 'post quick reply'

so i was trying to shoot some self-portrait's for my myspace page (www.myspace.com/joebusy) and after shooting i realized many of my pictures were not in full correct focus. (duh, obviously), so i thought of way to try and salvage the pictures, and a little CC i think did the trick. just thought i'd post the pic, comments and crit. is welcome

Your shots aren't bad but I would like to have seen just one of them be spot on in color and focus. I like the collection, but on my monitor I don't get a clear impression out of all 4 pictures.

It's no secret that I like "arm's length" self portraits... I saw this thing a long time ago about Jeff Bridges... he got this really cool panoramic camera and started doing arm's length self portraits that got a lot more then just himself in the shot... I LOVE those Jeff Bridges pictures... here's an example. I don't know what's going on in this shot, but I think he's working on a movie called "Tideland"... you can find a bunch of Jeff Bridge's panos with himself in them on the net... "arm's length self portrait" is one of the categories I'm going to specify the next chance I get.

I took this last night while I was out "painting with light." I wanted to see how far I could push things... This is at ISO 1600, f5.0, 25 second exposure. It was around 11:00pm, so it was dark. It's not focused very well because I couldn't see anything.

I was curious to see how bad the noise would be. Considering the ISO 1600, I was really surprised.

Well the D200 isn't exactly known for being light on the noise, so this image, in these conditions just made its stock fly up in my estimations... Just an amazing result...

D80 or D200? Two more days and then I could start saving for an upgrade.

I love my D50 and most likely will keep it as a second camera, but that extra resolution and the off camera flash ability is starting to stear me onwards and upwards.

looks like you caught a little ufo there... ha ha ha.

nice work. . i wonder about the d80 as well.. Sony has the a100 that is using the same sensor as the D200 for under $1000 so the D80 may be an upgrade that is very close to the d200.

just too bad that the D80 probally wont be in stock till christmas.

I know this comment is true, but Jarred... that comment is in line with telling a kid there is no Santa or his parents don't love him...

You just shattered my world.
