I finally got the Die Monster Video finished after months of trials and tribulations and flakeyness and financial issues. It's been quite a ride. The band is pleased. As always there are things I'd do different a second time around, but all in all, I think it's a decent end result. Let me know what you guys think.

Here's the link to the blog entry, lots of grabs there: http://chancestudios.com/thechanceeffect/index.php/die-monster-die-promo-is-finished/

*** EDIT ***

New version of the video is up now. A couple of new shots in there. Two sizes.

Here's a direct links to the videos. Please right click and do "save as":

DMD: "One Night at Devil's Rock" (quicktime - 480 x 360 - 135 mb)

DMD: "One Night at Devil's Rock" (quicktime - 320 x 240 - 90mb)

Now with a streaming flash version for those who are bandwith-challenged or just plain impatient :)

DMD: "One Night at Devil's Rock" (flash streaming - 480 x 360)

enjoy.

I checked it out. Some good lighting with the stuff of the girl walking... the video itself is a bit hard to follow and somewhat disturbing with the dudes with blood and stuff... I'm gunna have nightmares.

lol. Yeah that's how they perfom. Not my cup of tea, but they're hella nice guys. I guess they used to perform with no masks and none of the blood and stuff, but they became a lot more popular around here when they started their over the top thing. And in Utah, of all places! Go figure.

Thanks for checking it out, man. Sorry you couldn't follow it better.

Fans of the Misfits? just kidding. me too.

looked good. the narrative's shots looked really good.

any chance you could get rid of the shot that starts on the singer's nipple while he's sitting, then the camera pans to the guitar player. It kind of looks like the cameraman got caught staring at his nipple and turned away.

maybe make the cuts quicker to build the feeling of suspense, more so on the shots of the band. like a few quick cuts together of the band, then back to the girl.

oh, and, the girl is absolutely beautiful.

Hey, Mojo. Looks pretty good overall! The lighting is pretty decent in almost all of the grabs I saw. Right now I personally think alot of it looks a bit video-ey. I think a bit of CC lovin' would really bring out a nice pro film look. Especially with the lighting you've got going on. I can tell you've crushed the blacks and probably increased the whites, though I think a bit of playing around with layering different hues over it, playing with saturation, and other stuff could look even better. Most music videos have a distinct look and feel to them. This one looks like it's stock video with extra contrast. So something as little as what I mentioned above (color filters, saturation, whatever) might go a long way. Looks like it was a fun shoot :)

Here's a really bad example of what I was talking about:

Slightly CCd:

I brightened it a little so it brought out alot of grain. I think too much crushing of the blacks realy puts out the background in this particular grab which makes the overall shot a little less intereting. So in my opinion I would bring up the background blacks a bit so we can more easily tell theres someone behind the main dude.

That's my humble opinion. I really have no experience in shooting motion video - so don't listen to me :) Just do what you think looks good and makes you and the band happy :) See ya!

That shot shall forever be known as the Nipple Shot! Oh yes... :)

The performance clips were problematic for me. I didn't shoot enough coverage on them, so it limited my editing options.

I was showing more of the narrative stuff because I just didn't like the performance footage as much. I will take a different approach to shooting performances next time.

Yes, Whitney is smokin' :love4:

I always listen to opinions, my man. I appreciate your input. Like I said previously, I feel pretty blah about the performance stuff. I didn't want to delve into color grading too much on this one. I did a little on some of Whitney's wandering shots, but left the performances alone. I may rethink that at some point.

Because the whole concept is campy horror, I wanted to leave it raw. The only rule set for myself was to put hard light on the Monsters and soft light on Whitney whenever possible. I would definitely shoot another type of video differently.

Thanks again for the critique!

I would agree... and not even in the supermodel way, but just a very pretty girl... good casting of her.

Thanks,

The Monsters wanted a very nice girl next door type to contrast with their look. I was all for that. I think its better she's not an all made up goth girl.

The original is much better. The Graded shot (people need to stop saying Colour Correction..) looks like someone shot it with a crummy little sony handy cam and put it on "night vision" to shoot it. bleh. it just completely drains any contrast from the image and makes it a murky mess.

original image FTW.

Like I mentioned, the reason it looks like it was shot on a handycam was because of the grain. It was just to make a point that maybe he doesn't want to crush the blacks so much (because you can't see the guy in the BG). The point for the green was just to give it a non-raw feel. The original looks like raw footage from a decent camera.. not very film-ic. Anyway, obviously it wasn't a very good CC. My point was just.. maybe if he wanted.. he could give it a bit more originality with some CC.. Instead of just stock footage. Gotta go - pizza's done. See ya guys.

I understood what you were getting at, Jeff. No worries. Most of the light was on Zero (the lead singer) I'm not sure how much I could bring out Mercury without fuzzing it up. But thank you for the suggestion.

YAY no more nipple shot!

Any chance you wrote down your scene settings for the footage of the girl. If so, please share. You've definitely achieved a look that is much further towards film and away from video. Much better looking than a lot of the horror stuff I have seen shot on the DVX.

If there is one more suggestion I may make. When you cut to black as she is running into the building as the music cuts, start the next shot on the punch of the guitar. It's a little early feeling.

The nipple shot had to go. You'd ruined it for me ;) One of those things you don't notice till someone points it out, and then you can't help but to notice it all the freakin time.

I think I'm gonna let this version stand for a little while. No more changes for a bit. Don't wanna Lucas myself to death.

I'm trying to remember the settings. I don't own the camera, it was rental. This is what I can recall for Whitney's shots:

I shot 24pa.
Master Pedestal was between -7 and -10
Cine-Gamma was on.

The main thing was to light her as best I could. For the most part I used one Rifa. I like the quality of the light from the Rifa a lot better than the Britek I used to have. Just seemed to look better to me.

I also made sure to try and keep the f-stop around 4-5.6 so it wouldn't get too soft.

Thats about all I can remember. Sorry.
