P2 Store Files show up but won't Import into FCP

HELP...the P2 Store mounts on my desktop for my Mac, and I can see all the files there, but when I try and Import P2 via FCP the dialogue box doesnt show up. When I stick a card in the PCMIA slot and fire up FCP it recognizes and lets me import those files. Can I drag the MXF files off the P2 store and import them in to FCP some other way. I have successfully imported off of the P2 store, but not today...any ideas or work arounds. thanks.
Thanks.

First off, you'll need to re-import anything you've already imported into FCP. You put that you're using FCP 5.0.4. Read around this forum or just google and you'll find a variety of problems with ingesting footage using FCP 5.0.4 (ingesting P2 that is). You really need version 5.1.1. And even after upgrading to 5.1.1, stuff ingested at 5.0.4 will not be automatically fixed. The problem will still be there. The only way around it is to import with 5.1.1.

Someone else posted on this forum a week or so ago a similar problem with their P2 Store as well. The easiest work around I could think of would be to use P2 Genie to offload from the P2 Store locally to a hard drive. Then Import into FCP from the hard drive instead of directly off the cards.

No clue why it stopped working on the P2 Store all of a sudden though. You might want to read around the postings here for that. I can't find that particular thread myself right now, but do recall reading it fairly recently.

cheers.

With using the Genie program doesnt it just take the MXF files off. How do I import MXF files into FCP so they can be unwrapped as a .mov. It seems that I can drag all the same info as the Genie can by dragging to my hard drive. How to I unwrap the MXF into a usfule file in FCP. thanks.

Genie or not to Genie...

Genie or not to Genie...

Yes the Genie basically just does the same as you dragging it off. It just simply offers automation for doing it and for giving folder names and all the like. So its not a necessity, just adds a lot of conveinence and ease for you. It does not destroy the MXF files at all. Basically all you need to be worried about is having your 'Contents' and 'LastClip.txt' in individual folders (ie the P2 workflow equivalent of reels).

Once you (or the Genie) have got the files off the card(s) and put it onto your hard drive open up FCP. Go to the Import P2 dialogue window. It will ask you where the 'Volume' with the P2 media is (normally it auto finds it if reading off a mounted P2 card). Now you have to click the "+" or whatever next to where it says volume and navigate through your hard drive to the folder/transfered card that you want to import. Click on the 'main' folder that contains 'Contents' and 'LastClip.txt' in it and clip okay. You should now see all the clips from that folder show up in the dialogue window. Hit Import All (or select the ones you want and hit Import) and voila you should be good to go.

cheers.

I had a full P2 store. I connected it to the computer (mac). I see all mounted drives as icons on my desktop. I want to import it in FCP. But FCP doesn't see the store.
3 corrupted files on de P2 store caused a problem for FCP to see the store. I bought P2 log ( very cool software to log P2 without FCP). Took off all the material and format the P2 store and everything is working well again.

So if FCP doesn't see the P2 store anymore it is due to an error in one off the files on the P2 store.

I had a similar problem with my store: was loading a card on to the store and then the power cord was pulled out half way through. I should have formatted the store but didn't have time so I loaded the same card again. Later I mounted the store to the G5, saw the information but couldn't import through FCP 5. Went to the P2 Log website, didn't want to spend $200 on the full version so I downloaded the demo but it only allows you to import the first clip. SO, I ejected only the drive that had the power pulled, went into FCP and was able to import the uncorrupted drive.
