Time for an HVX shootout against new Canon cams

Interesting that Canon is again going with a 20x lens, but decided to start as wide as the HVX - 32.5 (35mm equivalent).

I wouldn't mind an HVX200 price drop, $4500-$5000 would be an okay drop point I think, versus $5500-$6,000.

But I'm intrigued about a possible XL2 price drop, how low can it go?

Still, I wouldn't mind the uncompressed HD-SDI out. It's getting a whole lot harder to decide what will replace my GL1.:(

I think they shold leave the price of the HVX alone and I would go even as far to say they should have priced it higher. The cost comparrisons to what a rate card rental would be, and also a date rate, or project. The camera pays for itself in WAY under a year, for me it was in 1.5 months. That was with a Vinten Pro head and CF sticks, P2 card. Keeps the industry in demand, and says the cost we charge cant be compared to if the client wants to go out and buy one themselves and shoot in house. To many Chefs in the kitchen, Too many people under-charging I knew this guy I talked to here in Denver, shot a full basket ball game for $75.00.. THAT IS RIGHT SEVENTY FIVE FREAKIN DOLLARS. Look at your local CraigsList. subjects like.. Seeking: Professional Camera Person with own equipment, but travel on own budget, but be the best in hollywood, be able to do some graphic design, Compensation: Credits, DVD, and lunch. or $10.00 an hour you choose.

Just sickening...

Give everyone on earth a free F950 for all I care... cream always rises to the top. I would say almost 1/3rd of my freelance work is me batting clean-up for people who tried to save money by hiring someone who was cheap... they only do that once... The people who are good AND cheap eventually figure it out. I used to charge $200 a day for me and my camera (years ago) but now I get $500 a day PLUS they have to rent my camera.

AshG for President.

The HVX, even with 8 Gig P2 cards, is a real bargain.
HD 1080 and 720, Varaible frame rates, 4:2:2 color sampling...just think about it...
4:2:2 color works really well for advanced color correction.

Using this camcorder is a real pleasure. It is a real wonder.

Anytime I would be ready to pay more if they release a HVX200a with better res and lower noise... anytime.

This is, and by far, the best affordable tool for total creativity.

In all fairness, thats just how a free market works. Its up to the buyer to figure out what they're getting into. This type of stuff goes on in virtually every industry (from carpet cleaning to software development). What are you gonna do? I mean, I get what you're saying; I'm a pretty advanced software developer and I have to compete with 20 year old college kids that own a copy of FrontPage.

Like another poster mentioned, the customer get burned by hiring an idiot and then they end up hiring you later anyway.

This sounds like a good camera- a FX1 beater for sure. However, I still think the HVX wins to it: The dvcpro hd codec, true progressive, workflow and Panasonic own cinegamma put it ahead. <snip>

Yeah, I'm sure that inevitably people will start to compare the XH A1 to the HVX, but the HVX is really another class up. I've reset my sights on the A1 now, but that decision is purely financial. I think the A1 is a great alternative to the HVX for the frugal shopper, but its certainly not a 100% substitute. Iffy aquisition codec, can't shoot strobe lights/flashes, no variable frame rates, less color info.. yeah, HVX is still tops in my book.

I'm pretty sure that Panasonic isn't going to lose any sleep over this camcorder, at least not in regards to HVX sales. Now Sony and JVC, that's another story...

I was thinking about it and the XHA1 could be the ideal HD camcorder for film students just starting out. First, the price is good. Second, it's got 24F which is an acceptable alternative to 24p and *ugh* Cineframe. Lastly, it's got the same manual controls as the higher-end models (G1 and XLH1) versus, say, the Sony FX1 and Z1U relationship.

I know I've posted a lot about these cameras, I'm still aiming for the HVX200 or RED (at the most) myself, but it's still exciting that the list of 24p cameras are starting to get bigger and bigger. Plus the fact that they're HD, but that's just gravy :).
