Am I the only person in this forum to think that 4X3 viewed on bigscreen tvs dont look as bad as people say. It doesnt really looked stretched or anything. I have been shooting with anamorphic adaptor and i think i am regreting it. considering i have to jump through hoops to get good focus

thanks

ive never had a problem with 4x3 on a tv 4x3 or even 16x9

rather put a few hundred towards something else.

So PAPA do you agree that (and i know i am recycling this problem) ANAMORPHIC is a waste. I own an anamorphic lense and i regret having started filming with it. The difference isnt all that difference. Just more image on the left and right frame. But its not really worth the hassle of measuring and taking aperature readings.

i urge all you people to set me straight. Take in consideration that tomorrow all we could view our work on is those big HD TVS.

THANKS

Without the anamorphic adapter, you can achieve the extra bit of " information on the left and right of the frame " by just framing your shot a little further back.

not sure how much you spent on the thing but id rather put the money into something like instantHD which will give you practically the same results, without the hastle of having an extra piece on your cam, wasting a few hundred bucks.

if i were to be asekd to get one? No. waste of my money, might be good for some, but for those who can figure out how easy it is to get around it,..... not necessary.

are you talking about shooting 4x3 and instead of cropping to 16:9 you are stretching the image to 16:9? If that 's what you are saying, I might just say that I can't stand when people stretch the image on their 16:9 tv's with a 4x3 image. And if your working with actors, they will hate you even more as everyone will be short and fat. Now if your talking about shooting in squeeze mode, I do it all the time and agree, that it works really well for HD tv's.

No my friend. What we are saying is shooting 4X3, masking it on our LCD screens. And then addind the widescreen in post. That way you have more freedom to frame you shot later in post.

So do we agree this acceptable in widescreen tvs? or do we have to blow it up some more?

It depends on the size of the tv. The bigger the tv the more need for extra resolution.

Myself bought a upconversion DVD (720P) and watch it on 100 inch screen. The extra lines does matter for me.

But if it dont do it for you, no need to shoot anamorfic.

Hmm. I think you will find most things that are shot and look good had a dp that first of all did all the correct focus readings. Resolution means nothing without proper focus. You can have 1080 footage thats soft on focus and it will still look ordinary. Id suggest always jumping through the hoops regardless of ana lense or not.
