oktava mk012 sources

Kelly that's almost an inside joke, but if you can handle the landslide of PM's that ensues then so be it. :)

I'd explain what this means if I could figure out how to post a picture in one of these messages but that skill has eluded me.

I would show you how wrong stories can be. For instance, people have said that I resemble Pamela Anderson. If I could figure out how to post a picture here I'd show you one of myself and how silly this rumor is.

If Matt put up that picture I sent to him of me you'd see how absurd stories can get. Me looking like Pam has the same credibility as the Oktava story which started this thread.

Available on ebay for ~$200 shipped, cardioid only.

Seems too cheap to trust, or is that about right??

These don't seem to be available from too many sources.

I have a 4073a, so I only need the indoor mic, so cardioid is the preferred? or should I get the omni?

still learning here.

I noticed this is page three but if you don't have an answer..here is my 2 cents before all the hijacked comments in the last 2 pages. I got my MK012 on Ebay for about 100USD. I wouldn't pay any more since it's been out for a while. You need a Hypercardoid for close dialog but the cardiod will suffice but a less DB. Forget the omni. Use the 4073a for exterior and Oktava for interior. Just make sure you don't clip on hot feeds.

I gladly did and would again pay the extra $75 to buy an Oktava from the Sound Room (compared to you $100 Ebay price). But I'm curious about the comment that you wouldn't pay more "because it has been out for a while". What do you mean?

If you mean that the OKtava mike is not a 2006 model I don't think that mikes are like cars. However, I do remember reading a post from Matt stating that any Oktavas bought in the last year or so have a newer circuitry which incorporates a modification that some were doing on the mike on their own.

So, the current Oktava is an upgraded model. Spending a few dollars more at The Sound Room and knowing that you are getting the real deal I think is the smarter route to take especially knowing the controversy about the non-Russian Chinese versions that are out there.

Small price to pay for peace of mind and a dealer you can count on to help you if you have a problem. But, that's just me.

By the way, I purchased a matched pair of Oktava MK012's from
oktava-online .com and they arrived within a few days.
Highly recommended for folks in the UK and Europe.

I ordered a matched pair of hypercardiod (only) from sound room.

They'll be here next week, just in time.

Thanks everyone.

Smithy,

Your statement above confused me. What does the fact that it has been out for a while have to do with the price you'd be willing to pay. The Sennheiser 416 (generally considered the industry standard shotgun) hasn't changed price much and it has been out for at least 10 years. Same thing with the Schoeps. Microphone technology doesn't become obsolete (generally) like cameras and such.

And, regardless, the low price of the Octavas, even at full retail, is still significantly less that any microphone of equivalent quality. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is a bargain, even at full retail.

And, finally, if you bought a brand new Octava on eBay, and only paid $100, my guess is you got a very nice Chinese version/knockoff.

Not brand new..used by the previous owner..but was a russian model. He was just liquidatiing out fast and did a 1 day sale vs the multiple day auction because he needed the cash fast before he leaves the country.

Your close. The "B" looking letter in Russian is silent but the "b" looking letter is pronounced like a "v" in english. So this "guru" on the other forum may have gotten this from that confusion. I haven't seen it ever spelled in with the Rusian character but to be pronounced correctly it would be spelled like it had a "b" in it. So I guess it is poss that there were non export models that had a cyrillic spelling?

I'm not a linguist but I believe the 'B' in 'OktaBa' is not a 'B' at all. It's a Russian (Cyrillic?) character. My guess (and it's just that) is that 'Oktava' is their westernized tradename. As wabbit said, there are Chinese knockoffs that have been sold through outlets like Guitar Center but the quality control was so bad that I think has Guitar Center stopped selling them.

I think the bottomline for most folks here is that if you buy an Oktava from a reputable souce such as the Sound Room, you'll get the real stuff. And if you get the real stuff and mount it properly, you'll be real happy with the results you get. I know I am.

I have recorded a number of concerts with an Oktava pair one on either side of the stage about 7 feet up pointed to cross mid stage at instrument hight, no pad, and they sounded fantastic. I was going through the mixPre into a PMD 671 (DAT the first time) at 48/24.

I got the Oktava for indoor dialogue scenes... I bought a matched set, expecting I'll want to record some scenes in stereo with the back and forth dialogue, and indoors it can get tricky for the booms to move without crossing the field of view of the cameras.

Anyhow, on a related note, a friend is a classical piano composer, and I was going to practice by recording him performing his latest sonata live.

Can I use the MK012's with the -10db cap, on stands, at an appropriate distance (trial and error) from the piano (mixing through a field mixer)? Or do I have to make him borrow some piano mics?

Planning on ordering one of these today. Liking the black one, just wondering what other people are ordering? Also planning on getting the BBG so do I really need that foam windscreen they can add for 7$? Speaking of the BBG, noticed there are at least 2 sizes and I have not found the size specification on this mic (though I might do a better search when I wake up).

Thanks

I ordered the black one because I think it looks cooler but it doesn't matter which one they are both the same just different colors

You don't need the foam windscreen, just leave the BBG on it all the time. You want the 20mm BBG.

Well got my mic in today. Have not had a chance to check it out though. Need to order that BBG. Who's the cheapest and quickest or are they all about the same on this item?

just the hyper cap. you will most probably never use the -10dB unless you record in some incredibly loud environments.

I received my Oktava this week, I never realised it was so small. Haven't got a chance to check it out yet. Looking forward to. I also got the shockmount and foam wind screen, is this sufficient for indoor use ? as I will be using my 416 for externals.

I use this setup all the time...I don't need the BBG since I use the Shure Foam...It's good enough.
