A question about using music for soundtrack

Has anyone used music from commercial CDs for their short films?

I have done so for a short film I just made. I was just going to give it to friends and family, but now that im finished I kinda like it, and want to send it to competitions!

What kinda costs are we looking at? Sky high? I just want to enter it in some film competitions. I dont want to make any money or sell the film or anything like that.

What are the processes? Do you email the company on the back of the CD?

I got no clue. Thanks for any help.

No idea what kind of costs you're looking at but you can probably get a festival release for some of the music. It's still gonna cost, though. That's the reason NOT to use commercial music for these projects...you get so tied to the music you don't want to replace it, then can't afford to use it.

just got to email the artists/labels and see what they say. Who knows even popular music is free or cheap sometimes. Never know till u ask the artist, just say what your doing with tell them how its being used and in what context and see what they tell ya.

anyone had any luck with that?

Some of the artists are cool about it. But its not up to the artist. Its up to the label. Ive got the rights to some indy band stuff where the band still owns the songs.

I remember i asked WASP to use one of their tracks personally for the ending credits of feature, they said hell ya, lable said hell no. :(

it is up to the label, the artist can say they want it but if they are signed to a major lable, u need $$$$

it isnt cheap...licensing a single song from a bigger indie label like merge or touch and go costs about $10,000 per song...major labels would be alot more...
