Uprezzing to HD..what are my options?

My 94 minute film (2.35:1 - 720x307 - Final Cut Pro Edited - 25p) is generating some interest and I just had some test footage blown up to 35mm and on the whole it looked fantastic! I need to blow up to HD now in order to show it to potential buyers. What are my options here?

So, what are my options for blowing up to HD?

Frame by Frame in photoshop?

Photozoom v InstantHD?

Compressor's Advanced Conversion Option?

Are there any other methods I should be looking for?

Thanks

you're on the right track - you might consider Algolith plugins as well on your list of possibles. I've done this kind of thing a few times, be happy to do it or talk to you about it on a consulting basis - mike@hdforindies.com. Not to be a snot about it, but I've got some hard won knowledge...

wahrez if your showing it for the purposes described personally I dont think the photozoom or instant HD are going to give you the quality you desire. They are good options for say a straight to DVD IMO.

Sounds like Mike knows some higher end options to consider.

On that Mike, or anyone else - how good are the compressor advanced conversion options?

IF you want it done and know that it will look its best. Take it to a dub house and they can uprez it for you no problems. It might cost a little bit of money maybe 500 dollars for 94 minutes but it will look awesome. I have uprezed using a panasonic 1200 firewire out from FCP (DV timline shot on dvx) and then took that out to the panasonic hd1700 deck uprez was in realtime right out of the timeline.

thats interesting, so there was no "post" work done you just uprezzed it dv -> hd? how is that better, as surely there isn't any extra information for the other deck to work with? what kind of things did you notice?

I would really suggest learning how to use AviSynth. It's a free, open-source frameserver, that has a modular, plugin-based architecture. Go to the forums on Doom9.net to learn about it. It is a truly remarkable piece of software. Note that it is currently Windows only...

Here's a rough template for you to follow:
Code:
loadplugin("XSharpen.dll")
loadplugin("removegrain.dll")
avisource("output from fcp - lossless codec, or DV.avi")

AddBorders(matte as needed to maintain AR)
Lanczos4Resize(7680,4320).XSharpen(some setting).LanczosResize(1920,1080)
RemoveGrain(mode=5)

This willl take your outputted timeline from FCP, upsize it to 4k using Lanczos4Resize, a very sharp resizer. This is done to facilitate supersampled sharpening using XSharpen (or whatever sharpening algorithm you desire). Finally, and resize back down to 1080p.

If the results are oversharpened, reduce the XSharpen values, switch to a different sharpener, or drop the supersampling alltogether

This should give you really nice 1080p video :)

Ask the people on Doom9 if you need help. Look for a script called iip, also known as "integrated image processor". This is a very powerful (VERY SLOW ALSO) script that has many tweakable variables to handle high-end resizing. When properly configured, its results can exceed lab work with professional hardware. And it's all free :)
