Dell 2407WFP 24" Ultrasharp Wide Screen LCD Monitor Digital DVI-D (HDCP) with component & composite inputs, 1920 x 1200 Resolution, 1000:1 Contrast ratio & 6ms GTG.

Sounds sweet....

Cost's about $700 USD

Has anyone tried pluging in a HVX to one of these?

Like many others I own a Dell 2405. Would be happy to hear about experiences with the successor.

Just to chime-in, I purchased the Dell 2405 to use as a video monitor, both on shoots and in the edit bay. I also purchased a BMD HDLink to feed the SDI output from my Kona 3 card to it.

Bottom line, guys, the Dell is a killer computer monitor but a really lousy video monitor. It happens to display video but really cranks up the artifacting and macroblocking in the darks.

I purchased a Sony MFM-HT75WS for $400.00. It blows the Dell out of the water as an HD video monitor. It looks REALLY good, I wouldn't do critical color correction on it but as both an editing monitor and a field monitor, it is most excellent.

My Dell is now my main FCP monitor on my G5 sitting side by side with my Apple 20" CInema display. It is PERFECT as a computer monitor but is a very poor choice as a video monitor. Buy a real video monitor if you need a video monitor.

I see no reason why the 2407 will not look similar to the 2405.

I second these comments. I'm now usng the Dell as my main computer monitor (it's fantastic for that!), and using the Sony in the field. The Dell will actually make you think that the HVX sucks. I think a lot of the "noise" paranoia that was going on when the HVX was first released was due to people seeing the HVX image on the Dell monitor. It really is a lousy video monitor.

As a side comment, there is no need to use the HDLink to feed the 2405 from the Kona. In fact, I talked to Jerry from AJA, the top guy in fact, and he told me not to use their's or the BM boxes as they truncate the signal so much to get it to display on LCDs and Plasmas that there is atrifacting introduced .He recommended, and I will attest to the fact that the component feed directly from the Kona 3 to the 2405 looks much better, so much so that I took back my HDLink and got my 700 bucks to spend on a second 2405.

While I don't own a Dell 2407, the replacement for the popular 2405, I've been doing some research on it because I was ready to purchase the 2405 when the 2407 replaced it. Since the release of the 2407, there have already been 2 revisions to fix quality issues, and even the A02 revision doesn't seem to have fixed all the issues.

The primary concern was banding on gradients. Another concern was that the light bleeding out of the left side, disproportionately to the right side. Also, some of the monitors seem to be tilting slightly to one side, a defect in the stand.

All of these issues, and the fact that Dell is having a difficult time fixing these issues, I decided to not get a 2407. Instead, I'm looking at buying a 2405 from eBay.

Here is the dell monitor "complaint" forum which you can keep up to speed with developments on the 2407 issues. http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=dim_monitor

I just purchased two 24" 2407's for use as computer monitors, powered via DVI-D by nVidia Quadro FX 3400. They're amazing as computer monitors. I've seen none of the issues mentioned above and would recommend them to anyone....as computer monitors.

I monitor HD via a Panasonic plasma TH-37PWD8UK; however, the easily switchable inputs on these Dell monitors allow me to plug the HVX200 component cable into one of these monitors, solely for use as a way to see how the HVX reacts to scene file changes. My system ingests native MXF, so there's no use for the HVX component cable, other than this.

Highly recommended...although now that they're two weeks old, prices have dropped from the $806.00 ea I paid. Oh well. Love how my graphics card has a 1920x1200 setting, making the desktop 3800x1200.

Hi Don:

Interesting feedback on using an HDLink. Problem is, I am using the composite out on the K3 Box to feed my NTSC monitor and dub rack. If I go with the analog YUV out, I lose the composite output don't I?

I am going to run some tests to see if I can see any difference between the two on this cheapie Sony LCD. To my eyes, it looks mighty good with the HDLink output.

Best,

Dan

Exactly. I second that about the Dell. I love taking my footage and putting it on a Plasma or a real HD cam and all the crap I see on the Dell just vanishes...

How portable is that Sony monitor?

Hi Justyn:

The Sony monitor is VERY portable, it fits into my old Pelican 1600 case. I just took it to Colorado for a shoot last week and it was fine, not too large or heavy, The only bummer is, as far as I can tell, Sony has discontinued the model, I should have bought two of them. They were cheap and they work beautifully.

Best,

Dan

Can you monitor 1080i footage on it? The specs I found say it's 1280x768.

EDIT: Nevermind...I found the info. It downconverts the signal.

Are they useful for setting focus?

i use one of these on the Y/G/CVBS output on my kona 3 breakout box.... you'd still have to switch between composite and component in the kona control panel, but this lets you keep it wired for both.

the 2405 is amazing from everyone i hear and i really want to get one. Ive done a lot of shopping around and I know you can get rebates and coupons for dell.com and stack them, I heard a while ago some guy stacking a bunch of coupons and being able to get the monitor for 350.. sadly when i went to go try and do the same thing all of the coupons were expired. (This was about a year ago) If anyone knows of any special deals or the cheapest/best place to get this monitor please let me know because I really want to get it soon. Thanks!

FYI: The Dell and the Apple Cinema Display use the same LCD screen, made by the same manufacturer. While the Apple case does look cooler, the Dell costs much less and has more features.

Hello,
If you want to purchase that Sony MFM17xx monitor, Overstock.com has them in stock. for around $500. You're right; it IS a nice monitor ;-)
cheers,
