Can anyone get 1080p Quicktime videos to run smoothly?

Hey boys,
After receiving a dell 24 incha i am now a 1080p addict :2vrolijk_08: however im wondering if these video clips can be played back smoothly on a PC? My CPU is overclocked to approximately 4.3 ghz (stable) and they still run choppy? I recently did a real time test watching the CPU for spikes but even where the most intensive part in the clip is being shown it still only reads 85%? This would be say a scene where a flock of birds fly off etc.

I should add that 720p runs perfectly :)

Does anyone have a duel core or maybe a new 4800+ or even Powermac or MB Pro that can do it? Id love to hear from everyone.
Confused, Ryan :S

1080p runs perfectly smooth on my PowerMac 2.5 with 2.5gig ram, on 2 23" displays.

yeah, you have something less up with your pc. what kind of graphics card do you have and how much ram. do you have suffient cooling for that overclock also.

I have an ati x1900xt graphics card with 1gb of corsair XMS 2-2-2-5 550mhz ram. Cooling is perfect as she runs extreamly cool. ????

1080p smooth on MacBook

1080p smooth on MacBook

I can play 1080p h.264 on my $1,300 MacBook (2x2.0Ghz), with less than full CPU utilization, and no dropped frames. I've also attempted 2 streams of 720p h.264 and a 3rd stream of 480p h.264, all at the same time, with 95% CPU utilization no dropped frames.

Needless to say, I'm happy with my investment. Now for a display that will actually show the entire frame...

Thanks for everyones input here. I currently have western digital 250gb sata 2 drives.
There dosnt seem to be many PC owners answering?

I think upgrading your video card with more video card ram would solve your problem. I am only running dual core at 3.2 gig each with Ati 512 ram video card and 2 gig system ram, and it works fine. Make sure you don't have something eating your resources.

I never use anti virus or any other background applications on my video editing computers, that can kill playback performance.
Also disable any software that detects for certain files types, like real layer constantly checking your system to see if a real player file is trying to be played.
Nothing should be running or starting in the background.

I am on a pc

the x1900xt has 512mb of ram. I have everything closed and still it slightly jumps. Also if everything is on stock settings it is still choppy :( I have been playing Oblivion and Prey at 1920*1200 and they play at around 40fps! Why cant i play 1080p video smoothly is beyond me?
I have also tried playing around with ati video settings and also quicktime 7 settings but nothing seems to work?
they also suffer from tearing, isnt the ati cards actually ment to accelerate H.264?

I have a 3.6ghz ETM64 with 4gb ram and it plays 1080p at full rez on my Dell 24" with no issues. Sounds like you may have some funky codec issues. I only have an ATI AIW X600...

ash =o)

I agree with Ash, I had problems with H.264 playing back with frequent brief pauses under QuickTime -- a simple uninstall and reinstall of QT 7 Pro fixed that.

Hmmmm..
Seems like the Macs out perform PC's when it comes to HD video playback.
Let this be a lesson to you all! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I assume you are only kidding -- this has nothing to do with the make of the computer or the OS it is running. It's most likely a software problem (either in Apple's QuickTime or ATI's driver).

Let this be a lesons to you all, this statement alone is why I hate to admit I even own a mac. :-)

Well, the quicktime h.264 naturally runs smoother on a mac than a PC, why don't you try running a 1080p wmv and see if that runs any smoother. WIth that said, my Athlon XP 4200 X2 rips through 1080P video like butter, it's clocked at 2.2 Ghz x2 but still doesn't use full proc power. Just one note, I did have some problems running 1080P video when I first built this system a couple weeks ago, but I figured out that was due to a bad stick of memory, after replacing that, everything runs great.

Thanks scharky. I can play WMP 1080p files perfectly. How did you know that you had a bad memory stick?

It took a while, I changed power supplies, updated drivers, tried everything, then on a whim I pulled out one of the sticks of memory, the computer ran really funny, taking a really long time to boot, and causing some error pop ups. I pulled that one out, and stuck in the other and everything ran great. Unfortunatly I had purhcased the memory as a pair, so i had to RMA it and instead I got a pair of 1 gig sticks (2GB) of Corsair, and everything now runs great.

That's not a generic PC problem..... I have a Pentium 4 running at 3.4 Ghz and no problem here... my video card is a Geforce 7600 GT.
I have no problem running 1080 video either quicktime and wmv.......
Probably and unfortunately it's something related with your system.
Anyway if your Pc is overclocked it could be a memory issue due to the excessive bus overclocking.
Just to be sure make also a try lowering your pc speed to its original values.
Good Luck:)
