Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

Making the 35mm adapter

Making the 35mm adapter

Hey everyone. I'm new to the board, and I have a question. More importantly, I have a problem. I live in an apartment and don't have access to any of the equipment needed to make the equipment. I own an HD100u and need an adapter by the end of august for a feature I'm shooting.

I would love to have one made by one of the fine people in this group. If this is amenible to this. I know its a lot to ask and I would love to be able to make it myself.

Hey guys, I have been reading this thread for a while, and have gone and made my own DOF adapter.

I did't make an anti dust encasing for my focus screen, and I didn't clean the dust specks off before I shot this test, so you will probably see those Haha.

Here is some test footage... sorry, it is all YouTube stuff for now. If anyone would like a high-res version, let me know.

Also, here are some pics of my adapter. I built mine a bit differently than the ones that I've seen on here. It requires no presicion cutting/sanding/grinding, you only have to cut a short piece of ABS pipe, and then it all fits together like legos. Haha.

Actually, here is what I used, and how it is put together, respectively:

(Starting at the DVX100p...)

+4 72mm Bower
+10 72mm ASIAN
Cokin P Ring which fits PERFECTLY on the end of...
2" PVC Female Adapter (ACE HARDWARE BRAND that has these little nubs that holds the Cokin P Ring there like thats what they were made for! I just hot glued that to keep it in place.)

Focus Screen - 2"x 2" piece of clear glass with Avery brand "Clear Binder Pockets" plastic taped flat against it (2 layers) . I had to grind down the corners of the glass a little, but then in fits perfectly inside the female PVC adapter. There is a little edge where the inner threaded part of the adapter meets the smooth open part for the 2" pipe to slide in, and that edge holds the focus screen right at the perfect distance.

2" ABS pipe cut to about 1.75" slides in the PVC adapter right after the focus screen. If you want, you can cut the ABS pipe and gind it so that it is the perfect length so that it slides in and holds the focus screen from that side as well, but I cut mine a little short so that I can slide the pipe in and out to adjust focal lengths for different lenses.

Canon Camera to Nikon F lens mount is glued to the end of the ABS pipe.
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D AF is where I put all of my cash. It runs about $500, but man, it works NICE.

Haha, yes, I only Hot glued it together, but it is working surpisingly well... I have had a LOT of trouble pulling it apart when I needed to make some adjustments... oh and I will paint it black soon. Haha. It looks pretty ghetto right now, but it will clean up nice.

seems to have a circle in the middle.... and it says not very bright right on the page....

i got those..and it does have a circle
not too visible to the naked eye...but it shows up on th image depending on how the light hits the screen........on dark situations it is hard to tell..but on daylight..cear as day and very annoying

pretty good results from an Avery folder! A tad bit of vingetting, but you have a great start and you will find yourself wanting to tweak it more and more :) I realy like the shot of the tree in the foreground. For the PVC, you can widdle some of the plastic off the outside then sand it down to make it smooth, then paint.

okay, well I built an adaptor basically identical to what Edweirdo's tutorial is. I used a Nikon F3 D screen, and am using a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 lense.
I am getting decent results, but, I can't zoom in past Z76 and still be able to focus. And the footage seems a bit soft as well.

Any suggestions are welcomed,

Thanks.

I assume that you have auto focus turned off- correct? With the adapter attached, you should zoom into approx Z75 and turn manual focus on and set it to approx MF19 (I believe thats what I had version 1 set to). Then make sure the canon lens is set to infinity.

Are you able to see things in sharp focus with the adapter by itself?

Ed

I'm not sure how to set the canon lense to infinity...and, I can't focus on anything very close to the lense, and things far away I can't make focused crisp and detailed. Only things like medium lenght (2.5 feet)

Thanks

...basically all of the problems that come with a DIY adaptor.

yea I know its not easy building one of these, sometimes the first build doesn't go so easy and so it takes time to troubleshoot and fix. My first one wouldnt work until the third time I reworked it. Dont generalize DIY adapters as having "all the problems". If you dont want to spend the extra time that it takes to finese these things, you can always shell out for a commercial one, letus, go35, sg35, M2 and the list goes on and on and on.

That being said, a note to those out there who are still interested in building one of these- DONT unless you have the patience and time it takes to do it right even if its not the first time. We are building optical adapters here- and since none of us are Carl Zeiss, we must let ourselves mess up a bit at first.

Now that we got past that- I have PMd you re your adapter and we will get it to work. Again, if you have the time and patience.

Wow. I usually spend 30 minutes tops on a thread. I started this one yesterday, and after reading every post, following every link, and watching all the grabs, I am finally done!!! Now I just have to digest what the hell I just read. A little daunting, but I'm stoked with the thought of getting the quality from some of those sample shoots.

I also wanted to give big props to Edweirdo, Marlene and Snodart. You guys rock. I think you really showed what this site is all about. Much respect.

The goal is to have the DVD finished and shipping before the end of August. I want to get it out as soon as possible, but it is taking time to do it the right way.

Bro, I'll send you cash today!!! This forum was started a while back, so when I start building my adapter I don't want to repeat the mistakes made in some early prototypes. I think your dvd will be a huge way to do that.

Aaaaa. So many questions, but I'll spare everybody until I can digest what I just read.

Hey guys,

I made a first attempt of putting together my adaptor a few days ago, minus using the Nikon screen that I recieved yesturday (Instead I used some tracing paper, which is definitely to grainy). But I did have 2 questions: what do you focus on when you have the lens at infinity? Should it be something far away? Or is it just a matter of getting whatevers in front of you in focus? Also, I could get objects in focus at Z75, but nothing at Z99. Is it the case that with these adaptors you only can have Z75?

Thanks,

Mike

I, too, have been working on a static adapter, inspired by postings here and elsewhere. The GG or focusing screen is the biggest challenge in my opinion. I've posted some pictures of my adapter on my site.

I'm still looking for a d screen but have a lead.

Mike,

To find infinity focus, you should focus on something that is as far away as possible (ie: distant mountains). Infinity focus starts at a specific distance away from the lens an then goes to infinity, so items closer to the lens will be slightly out of focus.

As far as the zoom on the camera, it all depends on the camera, macro(s), and the distance between the marco and the GG. With the various macros and distances that I have tried, I have found that there is usualy a range that you have to choose from by adjusting the camera's focus and zoom. There will be some camera zoom and focus combonations that won't work, but you should find that you can get a "range" of combinations to work.

Jeff,
Your tests look like you are on the right track. Keep on trucking. The issue of the focusing screen has been one of the hardest parts to resolve in my venture.

Thanks slimchrisp. I have been burning the midnight oil to get it done. Welcome to Ed's thread.

I like the cover taken from the zoom lens. Pick up an achromat and you will see a big improvement in the edges and color fringing.

what kind of lenses is everyone using with their adapters? is everyone using a canon f1.4 50mm? there are several posts recommending getting a trashed canon from ebay to rip out the mount. any problems with using a different lens? i ask because i have pentax and nikon at my disposal. and does it need to be 50mm? i'm assuming what i have will be fine. so, any recommendations on a lens mount? would this work for nikon lenses? (i have a d-200, with these specs on the lens mount: Nikon F-Mount compatible with Type D-AF, DX, AF-S, VR and G Nikkor lenses).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=366996&is=USA&addedTroughType=search

And this for pentax (i have an istD with these specs on the lens mount: PENTAX KAF mount compatible with PENTAX KAF2, KAF and KA mount lenses

Power zoom function not available
K-mount lenses usable with restrictions
S-mount lenses usable with adapter and restrictions
67/645 lenses usable with adapter and restrictions)?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=70648&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

Just want to make sure I'm getting the right things before I put my order in to b&h.

Thanks for your help.

whats the theory behind teh letus35 xl? How can the adapter bypas teh relay lens? Does it have a relay lens built into it and if so doesnt the end of that len that meets the camera have to be suited for a 1/3" ccd in terms of size? I am intrested in building an adapter without the stock lens as well and am trying to figure out how to achieve this

Nate,

The 50mm lens is the first lens of choise, as it is a "normal" field of view.
Make sure you can manually set the aperature on the lens you plan to use.
