It strikes me as yet another movie trying to out-Matrix the Matrix
The Machinist said:This comment bugs me for the sole reason that Neo is a rip off of Superman.
They even say so in reloaded i mean come on!

PS Did you see the scene when he turned round to face the camera while he was holding up the plane?

The Machinist said:I'd say the comment had merit if the matrix was the first movie to have crazy special effects.
That's a trend that's been going on in one form or another since the inception of film.
It's just alot more sophisticated these days.
And i haven't seen the bullet-eye thing but it does sound ridiculous.
Filmjunkie677 said:Glad to see you're passing judegement on his acting from a few clips and trailers.
How bout you wait until you see the entire film and then come back to the thread and enlighten us.
Why does it seem like everyone wants to hate this film?
please tell me more. You can't tease like that man, come on!desperatecomfort said:I don't hate the film, but I know people closely linked to it, and have heard a lot of first hand stuff about it, that makes me wary.
kgg said:Critics reviews also mean less now than they ever have before. A movie like the Empire Strikes Back got much harsher reviews in 1980 than Revenge of the Sith did because critics were more used to slice of life dramas back then--today almost every other movie is an action or comic book production--so lapses in plot and character are just shrugged off. And they all compete for a blurb and reader notice. Any reviewer who can give the new Star Wars flicks a thumbs up loses all credibility with me.
Donner's Superman was the first movie I saw in a theater. I thought it was a great film experience and the best comic book movie to date in terms of overall execution(Singer's Xmen movies arent bad though). Maybe it was the simplicity of Superman's origin story but given the fact that Mario Puzo wrote the screenplay he was remarkably faithful--and it was treated seriously.
Luther --and especially Otis, were treated for laughs--but I wouldnt call it camp. He definitely had Supes on the ropes with the Kryptonite in the chest.
Camp is where you wink at the audience letting them know that you know how stupid it all is. Donner didnt do that. It had humor--Larry Hagman's bit etc--but it didnt make fun of the comic book story at all. And given the fact how silly his costume is--its quite something.
And the opposite approach with the Hulk, Spider-man or Batman Begins where they take it all TOO seriously, loses sight of the fun you are supposed to get out of the fantasy story.
Spider-man 2 the best superhero movie ever? Riiight. At least Until Spider-man 3 I'm sure. I am biased as a fan of the Dikto/Romita/Andru era stories--but even if I wasnt, it is way more hokey than Superman 78.
Aint it cool FX demo where they showed how Brando was included in the new movie. Not sure if it was worth the effort but the technology is really cool.
I'll probably wait for it to come to video though.
kgg said:I wasnt an Xmen comics fan-and there were some things I didnt care for in the films but I felt that in terms of balancing seriousness with fun/humor/action, they did a better job than some of these other recent films. I just didnt see it as pretentious when you had Ian McKellan there doing a perfect tight wire act between seriousness and humor (especially in the second one). Jackman was also a very lucky casting choice I thought. Unknowns can work wonders with comic book hero parts.
While I admire the intentions, Batman Begins was incredibly pretentious to me. Many of the characters were giving Bruce Wayne sage-like advice..even the gangster! And they altered him beyond recognition by throwing in so many supporting people. I prefer Mask of the Phantasm and the cartoon series. He also looked like a kite flying off at the end.
Spider-man--I have lots of problems with the films-but I'll just say that Lois Lane was far more central to Superman's story-and yet he was still the star. In Spider-man, Mary Jane was pushed into the forefront. She only became important in the mid 80s.
You'd think that with CG they could really amp up the action scenes--in the comics Spider-man was making jokes and one liners. None of that in the films.
And the Hulk. I am all for treating subjects with respect-as long as the fun factor doesnt get sacrificed in an effort to try and be "important" and "deep."
The new Star Wars films did that too.
On Kate Bosworth: if the new film is set 5 years after Superman 2, then wouldnt that mean Lois Lane was a teenager in the original films?
