Lots of newbie questions!

Alright, so I'm new to the DVX world. I kind of like it a lot. It's something nice and complicated that makes me feel special that I have a DVX.

But, I need some help.

I've got a few newb questions, and some that aren't so noobish.

First, I see lots of talk about using the LCD. But, I'm used to Sony LCD's and it being a big no-no in the Sony world to use the LCD to set colors, or basically do anything that is related to change settings. So, I'm wondering, is this the same deal? Because I get two completely different pictures from the viewfinder and the LCD, and I want to know which one to use which will give me the more true look. In other words, which gives me the closest possible picture to what I'm going to see when I bring the capture up in Premiere?

Second, I've shot some crap footage, just to pull into Premiere and see how it looks, and, honestly, I'm disappointed in how it looks. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I'm not exactley sure. My footage is not of the crisp nature that I see in DVX footage, and it seems like I'm having a terrible interlace problem. The footage is so terribly interlaced that any diagonal line is stepped. So, for question two, what do I need to do to sharpen my image? Is it better to set the cameras detail setting to a higher number (right now it's at zero, just because I don't know what I'm doing), or which setting should I up/lower? I see that I can adjust the detail coring, but if I do that, I'm more prone for a noisier image, correct? Could I adjust the VDetail and the detail accordingly and then lower the detail coring and get an overall sharper, crisper image, with no noise?

Third, I posted this in the editing section, but I've not recieved an answer, but if I shoot in F1, I can edit the footage in a regular 29.97 timeline in Premiere? I'm using Premiere 6.5, and I know that makes a difference. If I shoot in F5 or F6, can I switch the framerate to 24fps in the project selection for the F5 file, or should I go with something else (the options under the 'video' pulldown option in the "New Project Settings" box are 23.98 or 24)?

Mainly those are my only questions. I'm just wondering about the crisp picture I keep seeing from some skate clips filmed with a DVX, and that's what I want. I want my footage to be as crisp and clean as possible.

Please someone help me. I've read about 9 pages worth of search, looked in online archives, read the manual, and have asked around, and I cannot find answers. Please please help me.

Your questions on getting the crisp image from DVX100 are most probably answered here:

Regarding your Scene File questions, I am a Vegas user myself and Vegas has a project template for 24P (with removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown option) which is your F6 Default Scene File on DVX100. I basicly do everything using this template when I record on 24PAdv (F6). I am sure Premiere has the same ability.

Try reading thru Premiere helpfile for more info if this doesn't help.

Cheers

What frame rate are you shooting at? 24p, 24pA or 60i? Premiere 6.5 doesn't support 24p project timeline. But I think you can still edit in a 29.97 timeline if you shot 24p, but the result is that your footage will run at a slight slow motion. Basically the 24 frames per second that you shot now have to fit into a timeline in which one second is 30 frames. So the footage will have to run slower than normal.

No. Shooting in 24p mode and bringing it into a 60i timeline will not result in slow motion. 24p is recorded in a 60i stream with 2:3 pulldown, which adds the frames necessary to view 24p at that increased frame rate. When you capture, you capture the 60i file, and everything is correct.

Besides, running 24 fps at 30 fps would result in FASTER motion if that's what it would really do.

But it doesn't.

If you want to edit 24p footage in Premiere 6.5, then shoot 24p standard, not 24p advanced, and edit in a 60i timeline (or 29.97, as it's also commonly called). It will retain all of its 24p aesthetic; you just won't be able to edit the native 24p frames.

i read that thread darmanb suggested and i went home and followed the instructions and i got to tell it changed everything for me it made my video much better and made me feel as if i was shooting for the first time with all the new things i had learned. thanx

I primarily shoot in 60i. I might take it out and shoot some in 30p.

I bumped up some of the scene file settings yesterday and got more acceptable footage. I think it's just a resolution issue.

I set my TV using the color bars on my camera, and then I bumped the settings around to get a picture similar to what I was seeing on the TV. Who knows how it'll turn out.. I kind of realize now that it was kind of a double negative, using one to set the other, and then using the one just set to set the first one, but it seemed like a super good idea at 2am.

Basically I just want to know how to get the sharpest lines out of my footage. I bumped up detail and vdetail, and I'm getting a sharper picture, and I turned the detail coring down a few notches so that I don't get a really noisy picture. But by doing that, did I just cancel out the effects of detail and vdetail? Well, not cancel them out, but did I dumb them back down?

I feel like a little kid when I play with the settings and stuff, having no idea what I'm doing, and it being a new camera.

And, I sent off for my rebate and DVX book yesterday, hopefully I'll get it in the mail soon.. has anyone had any problems with that? I read that a few people were having issues with the rebate department, but I was just wondering if I should be worried?

Mrs. DVX rolled over her first hour last night, so stoked.
