Hey everybody, I'm about to shoot a short and I want 16:9 but I'm still not sure the best way to do it. 4:3 with taped display and then rescale? letterbox mode? squeeze mode? How do I get the best rez in the end?
Any opinions on the matter?
Thanks
B

OMG, LOL! Not to be rude or anything, but there is so much discussion on this topic throughout these forums that I doubt you will get much of a response unless you're adding something interesting or different into the mix, which you're not. Do yourself a favor and just start searching and reading up on what has already been posted. Again, not trying to be a jerk, just telling it like it is. Bottom line: shoot 4:3 and crop/zoom in post.

Shoot 4x3 and crop in post.

You're not going to do a film out (let's be honest) and the anamorphic adapter is too difficult to work with.

I agree... I can't shoot squeeze mode either Horse... I have the DVX-100.

Well yeah, if you've got the original DVX, then the option isn't there. There's nothing you can do about that. I'm just saying that you can get better results out of it than a lot of people give it credit for.

Hey,

I can see why probably you do as I would. Shooting in an aspect ratio and then ending up with something different is just an odd way to work.

Bottom line if you want to 16:9 end product why not shoot in that format? You don't buy apples to make Banana Cream Pie do you?

there was one guy a few days ago that posted some DVX footage and the head was so badly out of frame you can tell how he achieved this and this is how bad my feature would look if I shot it that way.

I'll say it again if you want 16:9 end product shoot it that way to begin with.

Hey,

For those who have the original DVX100 what are your options? Using the 16:9 adapter? Why not use Letterbox mode?

Surely it can't be any worse that a $500.00 camcorder.

It's how almost every Hollywood movie is made.

Do a search for EXTENSIVE discussion on that. Suffice it to say, letterbox is the worst way of going about it UNLESS you plan to do nothing (including CC) but straight cuts and never plan to watch on anything but a 4:3 display.

I taped off the LCD with black tape to the ratio I wanted and so far it works fine. I just crop in post and everyone thinks it looks fine.

Well i've got a 100B so squeeze looks exactly how its gonna look later. Cropping sounds like a wierd idea to me.

Why not Letterbox...?

Why not Letterbox...?

Hello there..

I am a newbie, hoping for your patience..!

I am shooting with a 100B in Sri Lanka at the moment for a foundation working with children and I have been shooting in letterbox so far. What is the difference in shooting 4-3 and then cropping compared to letterbox from the getgo..?? I am making sure to composing correctly of course..!!

Someone mentioned in this thread that it is bad unless only to be viewed on a 4-3 tv..???

And if not a good way any suggestions regarding changing mode and not waisting the footage shot so far...

Thanks guys..
Kenny
