hey guys i made my own version, tell what you think

Sorry for this lame question -- but how do you upload pics in the message reply?

you have to host them yourself

then you click the image of the mountains and sun on the reply panel and paste the link to the image there.

alternately you can type
and past the url to the image between

so it looks like this
htttp://yourdomain.com/yourimage.gif[/IMG ]

(only without the space before the last ] which I had to leave or it would try to interpret what I typed as an image.)

good luck

You're also going to need a much lighter area in front of the car for its headlights...
I agree with you... I like very much the JDS's second version; also harry.mchugh did a great work, but I think that using just FCF is impossible to obtain a look like that.

Jack, could you let me see a screencapture of your cc windows? something like that:

How do I do a screen capture like that?
here's one I just did quick and dirty in FCP
using 2 layers of video with
3 way color corrector, an 8 poing garbage matte, and feather on th top layer
and
3 way color corrector on the bottom layer
tell me how to do a screen capture like that and I'll put it up tomorrow.

I like it but I think it may be too subtle, man. I mean really it looks like video. You can see the patient is a smoker and the left lung appears a little perforated. Wait... is it a lung or is it Dick Cheney? Oh well. Take your pick.

the thing that sucks about the 8 point garbage matte is that once you've made the basic shape you can't just drag the whole thing around as the car moves and tweak the points as needed.

the thing that sucks about using the shape mask (which you could use intsead) is that while you can move the whole shape as the car moves, you can't tweak individual points ... even to set it up initially so it will just be a 2D oval or diamond or rectangle

In "motion" this would be a snap. You'd draw your mask or matte in, and then you could drag the whole thing around and tweak points as necessary.

Snap means very easy, right? I've got motion too, but I'm a newbie, both in FCF and in Motion.
Could you help me with a Motion screencapture? :dankk2: :dankk2: :dankk2:

D'OH ... you have motion this whole time?!!

...I'll try to do it in the next couple of days.

sorry guys, I haven't run it yet and I don't really know what Motion could make.
I can't wait to be on holyday, I have to learn a lot of things!!!! :crybaby:

Making and Dragging a Mask around in Motion

make two layers like in FCP
for each I used the
"desaturate filter"
and the
"gamma filter"
on the top layer select the draw mask tool (its menu is pulled down in the grab under "help"
Picture%201.png

then draw your matte by clicking to create each point
click invert (see below) or the dark portion will be inside the drawn area.
I used a negative feather (see below) after I had drawn the shape (meaning that it feathers in rather than out) and then adjusted the points as necessary so that the light fell like I wanted it to with the feather on.

Picture%202.png

then, by clicking on the layer (deselecting the shape - you might be able to hit enter to do this too) the dots disappear ...

Picture%203.png

... with the dots gone you can drag the layer forward as the car moves without having to move each dot ... when something doesn't look right, double click to make the dots appear and adjust them.

Picture%204.png

IMPORTANT: for this to work and move with a video clip you have to have the red record button toggled on in the playback controls. Otherwise it won't "record" then playback each adjustment.

IMPORTANT: Its better to do more frames and then fix the spots in between than to do one frame, then the next and then the next, etc. Do your first frame and then try something like every 24 frames, or maybe even skip all the way to the end of the shot to do the second key frame. If the car is moving at a constant speed and the camera is also moving at a constants speed or locked off then you might be pretty close. Then look back and see where it's off. See if adjusting in the middle helps. But the basic idea is to work in large chunks with few key frames, then smaller and smaller chunks with more key frames as needed.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you record a keyframe on frame ONE. If you draw frame one, then go to your next keyframe and record there, your shape information won't be recorded / saved as you set it for the first frame.

is it possible to apply 2 or more masks? I would like to have the lights on in the rear car too

JDS awesome posts....... you went to so much trouble. Dont want to blo smoke up you a hole, but its people like you that make this site what it is.

As a relative newbie to FCPS (ditched ppro) things like this are invaluable.

Can i just say though before you ditch one NLE caused you annoyed about price structure...... please remember the cost to your time personally. Anyway my results on FCP have been awesome. Best stuff I have done as far as editing.
