Silly title I know. My friends and I shot this recently on the HVX.
Shot 24pa DV squeeze mode, except for the slow-mo shots, which were 720p.

Hope you like. Please right-click, download, etc.

(Had to remove it for the sake of my bandwidth, thanks for all the comments 07/12)

Oh man, the one shot where he just nailed the guy on the beach and he went flying was just my favorite. I backed up and watched it a few more times just to bask in it's awesomeness.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that he was a piñata and they were all after his "sweet goodness". Who was that guy that ended up getting it all though? Was it the guy who came to the door? Because that was the only thing that ended up confusing me.

Overall though, I liked it, pretty cool film. Really dug the opening sequence.

No offense bluetuned, but can someone on this board make short NOT having someone ducttaped in a chair. For the love of gah, this is all I see every single time someone posts something. Find something original man. This whole Saw?Hostel thing is old as hell.

Haha Justin is right, but 2006 is the year S&M is in vogue... haha... well no.
I wasn't diggin' the movie much until the end... I thought the human pinata was a wonderfuly creative idea. I think they should revisit the concept but with a different intro/begining. Very nice work for seemingly younger filmmakers. I don't blame them for emulating a current popular horror trend and having thier own creative twist.

Keep on going guys!

Justin no offense taken. It's very obviously a used up idea. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference but for the record I have not seen either of the Saw movies or Hostel (obviously I'm aware of them and this genre though). When we shot this, we had no script or even a story planned before we started rolling, we just made it up as we went. Very run and gun, so to speak. One guy just really wanted a shot of somebody puking up wrapped pieces of candy, so it all grew from there.

In any case, any comments on the shooting itself would be appreciated, rather than just dumping on the concept of our set-up. The bound and gagged thing is a used up idea, sure, but I think where we went with it is fairly unique. I'm willing to sit through cliche moments as long as the payoff is more original, which I'd like to think we accomlished.

And keep in mind, we could have made a short about a washed up, third rate superhero.

I've gotta say the first thing that went through my mind was, not another somone torturing someone else short, but saw and hostel are by no means the originators of this. I think saw followed a million others, but who cares. I don't think there are many original movie ideas people want to watch. I felt this piece was crafted in a very frightening style, except for a moment; when the victim escaped and was seen sprinting like an olympic athlete, it lost a lot of its suspense. He was so fast and there was such a time lapse between that and when the bad guy realized he left the house, I thought, oh this is great, he'll never get caught. (come to think of it, for some sadistic, sick, reason, I wanted him to get caught and was really happy when the new bad guy hit him.) I think what I liked about the film is the sort of animal metaphor in the behavior of your humans. It felt as if the cruelty of the bad guys was not out of evil or malice but out of instinct. If this is what you were going for, congratulations, if not, I'm just an idiot.
good work

Thanks, there was some of that animalistic behavior in our thinking (thus the almost zero dialogue). I think the way I edited this, it does seem like he's getting away too easily at first, so I might rethink that. But most certainly do not think you're morbid for wanting him to get caught, we all do!

Thanks everyone who responded, I appreciate the comments and feedback!

In any case, to give one more response to the comments that it may come off as a tired idea....yeah, sure, but I'm pretty sure it's a rare occasion that I've ever come across anything that has been terribly original these days. Every video I see is a zombie movie, or a comic book parody, or it has a corny dream sequence, or it's a movie about an indie filmmaker, or it's a bad wannabe Tarantino, etc, etc. These are common styles that you see everywhere....but who cares. If it's what you like to do, then do it. I think it's more important that it's done well, which I hope we have at least approached here.

that was awesome. at first i was kind of bored but when the guy coughed up a tootsie roll running away i became intrigued. and when he got nailed at the end that was the best. it almost made his hunt/marder? legitimate. gotta have candy.

i thought the shots were well done and nicely edited. it certainly had a good flow. and someone give that por scared cat some catnip.

Research grindhouse ;-) It's as old a concept as indi film making in general. Referencing two VERY small and exclusively american representations of it doesn't do much for anyone.

Guys, I'm pointing out the fact that everyone on this board seems to feel they need to make a movie about some guy getting kidnapped and being chopped up. Now you do some research on these boards and count the number of movies that have the exact same opening, chopping up, duct taped person, and storyline and then you can think I'm wrong.

P.S. Grindhouse is made specifically for the purpose of mocking older horror flicks. All these guys posting their video clips of the duct taped people think they are being original. I haven't seen one post explaining they are mocking Saw or Hostel.

Since when does Tarantino like to 'mock' the movies that influence him? Do you consider Kill Bill to be mocking old martial arts films? It's called an homage. Tarantino and Rodriguez are doing Grindhouse because they love the movies like that. They're not mocking them. Mocking is what the Starsky and Hutch remake did, it's not what Tarantino does. He does it all out of love, baby.

Secondly, just because the person posting the movie doesn't explicitly state that they're either doing a parody or creating a direct homage to something doesn't mean they think it's some shockingly original idea. You can't sit there and purport to know what other filmmakers are thinking when they make a short, it makes you come off as terribly arrogant.

Great job dude.. Would love a better quality post if possible..
I think you really came up with an original idea with the human pinata idea.. Weather thats what you intended or not, it was quite interesting.. Money would be neat too.. quarters :-)

Moviestunts, no worries man. Thanks for being honest.

Justin, the money idea would be a lot of fun actually. Maybe if I do a sequel. Haha.

bluetuned love your work man. i liked the story and i thought it was pretty original and was put together well also.

i sort of get what Justin was saying about the chopped up cliches but we're all learning here everyday about video film making and hopefully we're all improving also. thanks for sharing your work dude!

Interesting idea. Kind of riddled with homo erotic stuff and the whole title and all that. maybe put in some man on man love and you'd have a festival piece. Gay cinema has never been more well received.
