depth of field?

To a degree, it can be done but generally not with the kind of success you get from the adapters. Also, you've really got to plan and setup your shot a lot more. Check out Barry's video. He gives an explanation on how to do it on there.

If it was really satifactory, you wouldn't see so many people making or buy the 35mm adaptors.

Also, from what I know the DVX can't do repeatable focus, so if you set a focus rack up and practice it, it might not be the same again. (while we're on that, does the HVX have a repeatable focus ring?)

actually, both the DVX and HVX have repeatable focus, just look in the viewfinder at the MF #. Find your first and second number and just return to that mark.

No, what I was refering to are those shots where the foregroud is in focus and the back ground is out of focus and then it flips to where the background is in focus and the foreground is out of focus. I kind of went off from your talk of depth of field.

Thanks scharky, I just thought that since the focus ring spun all the way around, 360 degrees and can keep going, it wouldn't be repeatable.

You can get a rather shallow DOF with the dvx. I have no problems doing focus rolls with mine. Just remember, wide open iris and the more zoom the better.

... But using the DVX without an adapter for a movie where you want only shallow DOF is not good. You simply can't make wideshots with shallow DOF if you don't have an adapter.

But of course, go for the DVX-DOF when you can, if you want to. I do it all the time. :)

As mentioned, check out Barry's DVD.

You're talking about a rack focus, and you surely CAN do it with a DVX:

Right-click and download, please.

Any rack focus inherently involves depth of field, because you're shifting your plane of focus from one point to another.

yeah, thats exactly what i thought... so that being said, wouldent that work better with an adapter or atleast have a more drastic effect?

Rack focus, focus roll, same thing. An adapter basically is a way to give you a longer focus length while still giving you a wide angle. If you need a tight shot and you aren't able to get the actual camera a long ways from the subjects than an adapter is the best bet.

Never used an adapter. Tried to make one, and it turned out fine. I just can't stand how grainy it comes out, and it's actually way too soft. I've never been in a situation where I wasn't able to achieve good shallow depth of field using the DVX alone. And since I prefer to not muck up my Leica, i'll probably just stick to what I have.
