Just to give you guys some background...

My buddies and I have just started production on a double-disc documentary film. Think Style Wars or Scratch, or the Jonze/Cunningham/Gondry series, but all about artists. Real artists.

When I say art, I mean:

Kent Williams
James Jean
Nate Van Dyke
David Choong Lee
Shawn Barber
Lucien Shapiro
Jennifer Poon
Shepard Fairey

I am personally very very excited about this self-funded project because my father was a painter in Korea, and I used to paint all the time, so getting a chance to meet all these really amazing people, some of whom are on the forefront of art right now, I mean it's just a dream come true. AS A COMIC BOOK GEEK, Kent Williams and James Jean are personal favorites of mine. Kent's new painted book, 'The Fountain', which Darren Arronofsky wrote is one of the best painted comics I've ever seen. Period.

Even if I spend $10,000 of my own money making this thing happen and I don't make a cent, I'm truly not going to regret it one bit.

I've already got my hands on a beautiful little sculpture from Lucien.

Anywho, I'm getting ahead of myself.

The Doc is going to be shot on my HVX, SD. I had a XL2, but my friend took it with him to Korea, where he will be for like 8 months. SOOO I'm stuck with pairing the HVX with a GL2.

Augh.

Basically my plan is to light nicely, and then shoot MED/CU with the GL2 (With the LCD viewfinder taped off for 16x9) and the wide/MEDS with the HVX, squeezed.

Yes I said Squeezed.

Did I mention I'm too broke to afford P2?

It's not just a matter of getting the equipment for the production workflow.

With just two artists, I've burned through over 10 hours of recorded footage. And that's just the first meetings with them. I'm going to be going back week after week to check their progress and document their lives in-depth. Basically imagine trying to do that for over 30 artists.

Yea, the real problem I'm having with shooting HD is that I just simply can't afford the hard-drive space I'm going to need to store this big project. I'm using the Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tapes, and honestly I feel a lot more comfortable for some reason, having a nice solid little tape to keep in a cool, dry place... Like under my bed. J/k.

Yep, I've started shooting in SD. When someone tells me how i can solve my problem of finding thousands of dollars, I'll be more then willing to shoot in HD. For now I'm happy with what I got, and I think for a documentary, shooting in SD is fine.

*PICS*
You can check out the new blog for it here, I will be updating the progress as I move along. This project is going to be a long one, a labor of love, really. Because I'm in the process of doing a couple other projects.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY LINKS DON'T WORK.
