"The Riverbank" - 24 Hour Film Festival Entry

I know how hard it is to do a drama that's not totally artificial in 24 hours.

Thanks. It does seem like the bulk of the films in the timed competitions are comedies.

Interesting how they start the contest at midnight, I can see the benefits of that. But did you find it seriously messed up your rhythm to start out that late? Did you change your sleep schedule the day before? Seems like it would be really hard to launch into production without being well-rested.

It is really hard and we didn't plan it that way. I was planning on writing it from Midnight to about 4 and then getting some sleep (which is what I did last year). But when I didn't end up finishing it until 7 in the morning I had no choice but to stay up straight for 42 hours.

There were a few moments during the day where I felt a bit delusional, but it was worth it in the end. :)

At the time, I thought it would be a disaster and I was definitely worried about the low light and the HVX, but I think it turned out pretty well, given the time constraints.

You did? Then why didn't you speak up?

Allow me to clarify.

When I wrote the scene that takes place in an interrogation room, I was very nervous, because I have no such room in my house. Then when I saw my dining room setup for the shot I was even more nervous because it looked like a dining room with a card table in the center (when looked at through the human eye/not the camera).

However, once I saw the shot in the production monitor I was giddy, because you made it all work. :)

I don't get far enough for quicktime. I get a website not responding.
Odd. I don't know what to tell you, the website is definitely up and working.

It's shot with "another camera".. But I do have a DVD, any idea how I can get a Quicktime file out of a DVD??
No, sorry.

great job! how did you do in the competition?
We never made it into the actual competition. :crybaby:

Our film was completed at 9:00 pm and we left ourselves 3 hours to get it onto a mini-dv tape and deliver it to the festival by midnight.

We tried everything possible, but we were unable to get the film from FCP onto a mini-dv tape. We were using the HVX as a deck and we could get the sound to transfer but not the video. :(

It was disappointing to not be in the official competition, but we still had a great time and I am very proud of the film.

Chris that lighting in the Interrogation scene was great.
I noticed you used Melissa in the movie. I've got to get some free time so I can work on one of your shoots because I learned a lot on jay's

I'm glad you liked it. Meissa is wonderful, very natural.

That would be great if you could make it up here for one of our shoots. We would love to have you.

I also just bought a DVrig Pro and i'm waiting for it to come in the mail.

I really enjoyed this film and it looked great. The only thing I think that could have made it better is if we didn't find out she did it herself untill the last shot. All in all great job.

Hi Chris, I did lost this thread but now I found it again, we have some technical questions:

did you Shot it with the HVX200?
HD? 1080 or 720?
What was the softawre for the edition?
How did you get it converted to the distribution format?

We have posted this in other thread:

Well, we are working with our HVX200 for a month now, made a little piece for my son's university work (he is in his last year of cinematography), we edited he 1080i and 720p undercrank footage in Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.2.4, every thing went fine untill we tryed to have the work in a presentation for his teachers.

We could not find a way to get the HD material exported well, when we exported to avi or QT this was ugly, noisy and defocussed, same when we get it back to P2 cards and downconvert to MiniDV; can some body tell me something about?

What is the best work flow to edit HD and get it in a format or support to deliver it to a festival, a client or TV station?

We have experience in Sd Dv but first in HD.

Thanks

PD: sorry about my bad english

In a wish to solve our need of having our work ready to show or deliver i a way that others can watch but until now, this have been impossible.

We are about to shoot a feature film an if we dont get the way to do it easy, we are going to do it in Dv 24p as some other (4) we made yet.

We really apreciate your help.

I thought this film looked great! I really liked the look of it. However, I thought the sound was a little too potent. I thought it picked up a little too much. Like when they put their clothes on, thats all you can here is the rustling of their clothes. However, this film is not about that....Okay, that is my take...

Bad Cat

Bad Cat

Nice work! I'd like to see Bad Cat, any chance of putting the link back up?

cheers,

Finally, because of the dimensions of the room (very small) we actually always shot in the same direction and just had the actors switch sides of the table. We then moved the camera from the left to the right shoulder accordingly to give the impression that we were shooting in both directions.
Haha, awesome job. You gotta love it when those creative solutions work.

How 'down to the wire' did you guys get? This is a very good short considering its a 24 hr conception to final.

It was shot with the HVX in 720p.
It was edited in Final Cut Pro.
The film was exported using quicktime.

I hope that helps,

Chris

Thanks a lot.

That is one of the downsides of a 24 hour competition. We simply had no time for a sound mix or color correction. What you see is what we shot. :)
