FS-100 and slow motion?!

You have to uncheck the Remove Duplicate Frames upon ingest when dealing with over/undercranked footage because, as I understand it, the Panasonic FRC wants to see all of the frames and remove just the right frames.

So, Ben, are you using the FS-100 and shooting all kinds of different frame-rates on the same 100-gig drive? In other words, you can shoot a ten-minute sequence in 720/24p, then shoot a five-minute sequence overcranked (slo-mo) at 60p?

Then the panasonic FRC deals with all the footage as it comes into the computer from the FS-100? Is that right?

Yes I can. Each time I hit the record button, the FS-100 starts a whole new clip. There will be a white paper out very soon on the Focus site, I'm sure it'll be linked here, too. Basically, when you shoot 720p24, the camera does just like the DVX100. It gives me a 60i NTSC file (just a big HD file in NTSC-HD, so to speak) with the original 24fps frames flagged. The FCP FRC pulls the flagged frames and creates a native 24p clip from those.

So, no matter what frame rate you set in the Scene Settings, you still get a 60fps clip with "flagged frames" so to speak. Final Cut's FRC removes all the "added" frames and give you a true 24fps clip, no matter what your frame rate was originally. Then, you end up with your in-camera speed effects just like shooting 24pNative on the P2 card.

I'm hoping and praying that the Focus engineers tell us (and soon) that they can indeed get 24pNative out of the firewire cable. That's just rock! And cut your storage space needs in half!

I don't think that the issue with getting 24p native into the FS-100 is a Focus issue; it is the way Panasonic designed the camera. But, with the FRC as well as the ability in FCP 5.1 to remove pulldown on the fly, it really makes little difference. The main advantage to the native format is its space-saving feature on P2 cards. The real need here is for Apple/Panasonic to collaborate on a batch feature for the FRC or simply to integrate it within Cinema Tools.

"What if you edit with Premiere Pro or Avid, do they have a frame converter for that?"

Good question.

Followed steps, still not working...

I'm running fcp 5.1 with the frc installed. I'm shooting 720p24 with EXTTC set on the Firestore. I keep getting the same message when trying to convert the 60fps shot to 24fps... "An error occured during processing. Unable to conform source media". I am able to convert a shot that I captured through P2, but not one from the Firestore. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Hi Suede,

Make sure that the UB MODE setting (in the RECODING SETUP menu) on your HVX is set to FRM RATE. FCP uses this to locate the frames to remove.

Matt speaks wisdom -- never change that setting unless you have a darn good reason; otherwise FCP's frame rate converter tool won't know how to remove the duplicate frames!
