HVX with and without M2 Test Footage

Great to here - I am up the road from you in SF Valley, so if you ever want help setting up your rig let me know :)

hi all. I just got off the first 3 days of shooting our feature in oakland using the M2 and the Redrock micro follow focus, and Every single person on the set is impressed with how great it looks with the adapter. We've had to shoot a couple of night shots without it, due to my 2.8 lens, but it's been so great.

I just wish 1.8 zooms were not so expensive!!!. We've been shooting a lot at 28mm and 35mm on my sigma 28-70.

I've just changed the set up to all screw in together, although I have not yet tested it for correct zoom on the cinescreen.

I've also found that after a couple days of lining things up, it's becomes quick to do so and the adapter is just simply stunning with the HVX.

I've got my order in for the Marshal HD LCD with the Nebtek battery mount for Panasonic batteries. That will help a lot as trying to follow talent upside down and backwards is really tough!

Sounds good Brian, I think I just may have to take you up on that offer.

I truly couldn't imagine a company having a more professional and caring owner behind it than you Mr. Valente, thanks again. :dankk2:

Geeze - mr. Valente is my dad! Brian will do. We're all just trying to make good storytelling here. The sooner we can get past the equipment - the incredibly cool, isn't-it-amazing-to-be-a-filmmaker-in-this-day-and-age, wow-that's-cool-look equipment - the sooner we can get to our passion and shooting!

Hi Brian,
I just became a disciple of the DVX Users group (I was an old Canon Watchdog junkie for years), and I just had to throw my 2 cents in here.

For what it's worth I love your micro35 lens adapter! Ever since Randy at EVS initiated me into the realm of possibilities your product opens up, I have been chomping at the bit to get our owner to unlimber some cash for it. I've seen them on set and even had a chance to play around with them during breaks. From one manufacturer to another... NICE WORK!

Hey Rob - thanks for the kudos. Really it's a team of people at Redrock who deserve any credit, especially James Hurd. We continue the Redrock way with our microFollowFocus and hope to really blow it out with the forthcoming microMatteBox and a few other goodies we're working on

Hey congrats Brian,
I haven't been on the forum for the last month or so but by reading this thread I'm glad the doubting thomases seem to be coming around to the realization that M2 + HVX equals the holy grail of film look on a budget. Also thanks for the gear rings.. they really work well.
Aloha

I just got my entire set-up ready to go. I was waiting for Cavision to send me the Cine/Film gear for my Cavision follow focus so that it could work with the Redrock lens rings. I bought the Cavision stuff a while ago (follow focus and matte box), but if I had it to do over again, I'd probably go entirely with Redrock. I'm glad they're starting to make ALL the accessories we need to do this. The quality is amazing, the prices are great, and the service is phenomenal! Brian even had me over to his home to help me learn how to "fine-tune" and ajust my M2.

P.S.: I didn't want to leave the impression that the Cavision stuff isn't great --- it is. And their prices and service are really good to (Jason has been terrific). I just love the idea that Redrock will soon be your one-stop-shop --- from M2 to matte box to focus whip.

Brian, any idea on when that microMatte will be out?

And do you have any plans on releasing a microFFwhip?

Hey Alex,

Brian has mentioned before that Redrock does in fact have plans to make a whip for their follow focus at some point in the future (but there's no date, and their new products do take awhile to come to fruition!). I would guess that when it does come out, it will be high quality and reasonably priced like everything else they make, but if you have a dire need for one I wouldn't be holding my breath for a release in the immidiate future.

Oh, and Brian (darwin), when using "too" as in "also," don't forget the extra "o!" (Sorry, coudn't resist). ;-)

Brian V mentioned to me that they were looking to release a whip in about 4-6 weeks and that it would be under $100 --- pretty sweet.

Oh, and Haakon (Haakon), when you have an "if" in your sentence, the "then" requires a comma before it. And, the word, "immidiate" is spelled "I-M-M-E-D-I-A-T-E" --- unless you were trying to be an "immidiot." (Sorry, couldn't resist either). ;-) And, by the way, you're bastard people! ;-)

microMatteBox is late summer. We should have pics in a few weeks.

yes, we already have the Redrock whip in production - it is really great and comes in a variety of sizes. Expect it to be somewhere around 1/2 to 1/3 the price of comparable chrosziel

Any chance of that whip being available for purchase within two weeks?

I've got a feature to shoot in two weeks and my only option is the Chrosziel right now.

Also Brian, what lengths will you offer for the whip?

Like I said I still see some edge softness and I'm trying to eliminate as much of it as I can with more testing. My setting are a 75 on the HVX zoom and a 17 on the focus.

Hi Brian,
When I use a zoom of 75 and focus of 17 I see the shadow of the motor at the bottom of the screen. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated by a new M2 owner.
Cheers,
Sam

Hi Mr. Blonde

Alas no - I could have used it several times over by now :) Whips will be 12" 18" and a longer one (I think 24" or 36")

Hi Sam

You just need to drop the motor down and it will work wonders on your setup. It's covered in the extras tutorial on our site. I think you dropped me an email on this as well?

Ok, I am not knowledgable in the field of whips and cranks for FF systems, because i have never used them. With that being said:

Why do you need to buy them? When I looked in to these to see what a crank and whip were, I found that it seems they are completely elementry devices and prob extremely easy to make. Here is one of the only crank pictures i could find http://digitalcontentproducer.com/images/archive/311vsSexpertiseChrosFF_DVX1.jpg

If you find out what the square notch is inside follow focus systems cant you just go to the hardware store and make a 90* arm that fits the notch? Just screw on a hard plastic ball to the top and BAM, you got a crank.

Same thing with the whip. http://www.rule.com/images/photos/1036.jpg
I can't tell exactly how it works but it looks like a stiff piece of metal or plastic tube with a knob on the end. This also seems to just plug into the center square hole of FF systems.

I think anyone who has building experience would agree a 10$ bill, 2 hours, and a homedepot trip would do just fine. Am I missing something?

For sh*ts and giggles, here are more pics so you can see different whips and cranks.

Hi Prodigy,

I don't know about everyone else, but I can speak from set experience and a manufacturing standpoint . The biggest difference is your buying something that is specifically manufactured for use with an existing piece of equipment.

Sure anyone can find a quick comparable solution for a whip or crank, but will it work seamlessly with what you have?

Will the weight and balance be calibrated for ease of use?

Will it match your existing gear or will it stand out like a sore thumb?
Believe me when I say, film crews actually scrutinize your gear as a means of determining whether or not you have your act together.

Will the threads strip out at the most inopportune moment?

Unless you have a family member who is a machinist and anodizer, you would be shocked at how much a custom integrated peice of equipment (simple or not) will cost you. If sombody else is making it at a reasonable price, and they can vouch for it's performance when used in conjunction with their original equipment, I say go for it.
