Yeah. All except the POV shots. The event is going on right now. These athletes are nuts. Its over 100 degrees and there isn't much shade on the course.

If your interested in checking the event out. The promoter have an incredible website.

I'll try to post a bigger version. I'm swamped at the moment.

Hey Ian,

looks awesome. Interesting for me to see. We had a prop in for a programme following the Port Nelson/Grizzly Tours team through training and racing but couldn't pull the funding together. Was disappointing to have to pull the pin on that. We cover a lot of AR down here in NZ and would have loved to get over to Utah. Congrats on the footage. Its good to know that had I made it over, the footage would have looked spectacular on the HVX200 <sob>.

Can you tell us anything about the project and your involvement?

That was awesome!!

I was wondering how you got a few of those rock-climbing shots, where the camera seems to be moving sideways around them... a crane?

Just tremendous!

Really looked fantastic. Seems like it should be a reality TV show to me. I'd watch haha. I always wondered how you do this type of shooting. Are you always running ahead of them, setting up the shot and waiting?

I don't actually shoot for the television show. I do more of the commercial end. To answer your question, yes the production team sets up along the course and also follows teams on foot. The event is being shot with a combination of Cine Alta's and the Z1U's.

They are them -

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.

I directed and shot lead camera. The score and edit were done by two individuals I work with on a regular basis. Their names are in the credits. All in all, we had little budget so we tried to maximize the feel of the piece with what we had to work with.

I have much more footage than we used. We didn't use all of the best shots in the edit. This had to do with time involved with the edit, competing schedules, etc...

There are a few NZ teams competing. NZ teams always seem to excel at expedition adventure racing. I'm not exactly sure why.

Tom Lowe -

We used a rather ghetto dolly for the climbing reveals. They have a helicopter look becuase we hand held the shots on the dolly.

Looks great man. Can you give a little info on settings and if you used any filters or add ons?

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

I used a spider brace for the shoot. As for the camera settings, I tend to shoot on the FilmCam setting and shoot with the degree setting instead of the shutter speed setting. I cut the shutter down to 180degrees. I also tend to underexpose a stop or so.

We didn't have time to color anything in post. I would have done some compound blurs in After Effects to simulate a tilt shift lens.

No filters.

Thanks for the info. I was discussing it with my producer who has a few years covering the southern traverse behind her and saying what a huge difference the music makes to the edit. Very effective piece.

I'd be interested to know what format you shot on and how you found the workflow in the field whilst running around.

Richard,

I agree music and the edit was key. We really made an effort to push away from what the adventure race norm for this sort of stuff is. The piece was all about making the sport look tough and bringing in some intensity.

As for the workflow. I have to admit, since I had only received the camera two days before the shoot, I called a DP friend of mine who really helped out with the camera settings. P2 worked great. We made sure to have two copies of everything at the end of each evening.

My colleague running the same exact camera settings forgot to change his shutter degree angle thus his footage has more motion blur. If you look closely you can see what shots are his.

Format 720 pn mode.

Film Cam settings

Everything 180 degree shutter setting or tighter.

Yes all the shots are staged. We shot with two adventure racers who also model so my job was made a bit easier. They knew how to climb/bike/trek/etc.

Nice job then, I really couldn't tell that it wasn't actual footage. It looked better than most on-the-fly stuff, but not too refined where it couldn't have been.

nice work man.... these two shots in particular I thought were really well executed, I loved the snare drum fill as the guy was mountng the bike, great job
