How can I network 2 workstations together for video editing/ not online?

I want to be able to Network together 2 workstations that arent conected to the internet, so I can share files back and forth. And do this as fast as possible.

These two computers are used for video editing. Most of the time they are not connected to the internet in order to save recources and also so I can edit without having a firewall or antivirus running at the same time. That way I know Im always safe from the risk of a virus ruining a clients project.
So the Ethernet jacks are available. Also I have heard of USB 2 cable conecting the 2 together. - Which is best, faster?

My hope is to be able to have a project and be editing differnt parts of it on 2 machines, and then render the entire thing out on one machine. I know this is possible but dont know what I need or how to do it. Specs follow. thanks.

Workstation 1:
Tyan Thunder K8WE w/ dual Opteron 270s.
2 gigs of Corsar RAM.

Workstation 2:
ABIT IC7-G w/ Pentium 4, 3GHZ
2 gigs of Corsar RAM. Matrox RTX100.

I'd just connect the two directly together with an Ethernet crossover cable, assign static IP's, and start doing my thing.

You want to get a couple of gigabit cards and a crossover cable and then assign static IP's. This should be the fastest.

If you have a Fry's nearby watch for their deals. Airlink gigabit cards, last one I bought was 4.99$. Airlink 10/100/1000 switching hub was 19.99$. If you have the hub you can hook up more computers as you aquire them.

And better yet than a hub is a switch - which runs at full speed on each line, not shared over all lines.

1) 100MBPS network, this is your slowest (viable option)
2) 400MBPS Firewire network , If you are running windows on both machines this is easy
3) 1000MBPS gigabit ethernet. You may have to buy two gigabit cards for both machines if they are not alerady equipped. This is the fastest solution, but you'll pay for it.

and face it - you do not have enough disk storage to do the work, and definitely not enough to hold it all twice to work on it from two PCs. So that gig-E network should really connect your two PCs to a NAS (network attached storage) device. You can get a 1 terabyte NAS device for about $800 now and have both PCs read and write to it.

I run 6 computers on a gigabit network. It's not that expensive if you don't get top priced hardware. I get my cards on sale and pay between 5$-15$ apiece for them. No more problems than the expensive hardware. (Not dissing top hardware as some stuff should not be compromised but I have never had a problem running low priced net cards).

Could you not store material on one computer, and use it on the other; if they're linked via ethernet or what ever then you can set-up share pernissions and pull only the video you need. You don't need to place it on both computers, it would work the same way a NAS does. One computer could read and write from the other. That would be the whole point of the network.

Firewire has two speeds..... 400MBPS and 800MBPS, so you could run 800MBPS if you don't want to go with Gigabyte Ethernet.
