Okay gentleman *drum-roll*

So you will remember i was going on about the japanese HVX, well i didn't get that and instead got an ex-demo one from Proactive in the UK for £3450! Which for the evil UK is okay.

I barely resisted getting the JVC for a mere £3000. (painful tho it was saying no to the JVC, and it was painful!) It was in the end because of the P2 feature (which ill appreciate when i can afford the cards...) and also cos of the fact that HDV i think has a more limited shelf life than the HD DVC Pro.

So I also got a ME66 Sen with fluffyness and gun handle, and a few extra SWIT batteries + all necessary XLR cables etc. Total came to 3995 including VAT and delivery.

Not bad given that in the blooming UK most HVX200's cost over 4000£ new anyway (even my japanese one would have cost 3250)

So its from a reputable UK dealer, and with finance clearing it should be released to me in 12 days (i got it 12months interest free credit.)

So gentleman, sad thing is tho i ain't got no goddamn P2's yet. I will have to use standard def for now, with premiere 2.0.

Once i pay off that bill (hopefully with work during the next 3 - 4 months) I intend to get a new editing system plus a P2 card! (hopefully)

But im ranting now lol, but tell me how well does it's SD hold up compared to the XL2?

Thanx again especially to Barry for helping me all the time, and to the XL2 and JVC guys for advice. I'm looking forward to getting it and having a play around ;)

Good decision using a recognised dealer..... it is possible to get the HVX for under 4k (just) I did! Picking it up tomorrow :) as it needs to be ordered in.

I'm not sure of what mic to get although if it weren't for the price the ME66 would be pretty close to the top of my list. I guess that i'll end up with the Rode NTG-1.

Ya Indy I know what u mean, well it was a stroke of luck it was going for 2nd hand at proactive, i mean hell it just went up last night, (quite late) so this morning i was like = me me me gimme gimme lol

At £4000 the HVX is too expensive in the UK (VAT for u huh) I mean i know most businesses registered for it claim it back (well all do) but i can't pass on VAT to my customers (too expensive as i work in a poorer area) so i aint registered meaning for me the full price for equipment.

So seeing a HVX for 3500 appx was a stroke of damned luck!

Congrats on ur camera too matie! Is it the PAL one (are u in the UK like me) if so id love if u could post when u get a chance, some SD PAL footage!

If I'd seen that price at Proactive you might have had a fight on your hands ;)

Need to look at the invoice but I paid from memory £3950 inc VAT for the PAL version and like you I can't reclaim the VAT :( so i agree us UK users do get a raw deal!

I'm based down in south London but I mainly got the HVX to document a couple of trips I'm making to Northern India and China in Sept thru November. I'm still slightly concerned about the P2 workflow with a laptop and the fact that Apple don't yet support 720 25pn the format which I believe will be my default.... fingers crossed it'll be ready by the time I go.

I hear you pain regarding P2.... I won't be looking at my credit card bill for at least 6 months and that was buying just 1 4gb card. Would love to have been able to afford/justify 2x8gb but hopefully prices will be more reasonable over the coming year or so.

Will be posting footage as soon as I can but can't say how good its going to start out being as looking through the downloaded manual there are just so many setting etc to get your head round!
Regards

Do yourself a favor: Wait outside the pub tonight until you see some wealthy JVC or Canon owner walking out . . . if he looks like he's really blotto. bang 'em over the head and take his wallet.

Opps, skip that.

Go see your old granny (or if you don't have one go see someone else's old granny -- odds are she'll recognize you as her grandson anyway). Tell her you've decided to go back to school and only need a few quid to get a leg up.

Never mind all that . . .

Just go into the nearest bank, with your hand inside your jacket (pretending you have a concealed weapon).

No. Hmmm, I'm running out of ideas here.

Ask your girlfriend to spot you a few clams.
Tell your boss you need a raise (retroactive to last September).
Sell your car.
Better yet, sell your girlfriends car!

What I'm getting to here is you've made your decision, got everything in order.
Do what you have to do but, for the love of Mike, please find a way to get your hands on at least 1 4gig P2 card.

Think of all the fun you can have with your girlfriend?
(hint, hint).

You'll thank me in the morning.

P.S. Congratulations on your new camera--good choice.

(now get out there and get yourself a !*##^ P2 card dammit)

Yeah man i wish I could get a P2 card right now, but sadly i cant, least not till ive paid this off, (which im getting some jobs to pay it off with at present and during the next 3months)

By that time i reckon maybe even the price will come down a little (yeah u never know huh lol) then i'll grab a card!

I'm totally aware of the uber ninja potential (and even purpose) of the HVX to shoot high def, but i juuust managed to get the camera and seperate mic set up, so in my 2nd wave of investment muhahaha, i intend to update my editing system (current ones okay but needs to be updated) and a P2 card or 2 ;)

But yeah im totally thrilled i was able to grab 1 2nd hand from a reputable source, cos i had consigned myself to (a still good XL2 or JVC100) but i had really wanted the hvx and so it rocks i could nab one with a decent £ reduction

Can't knock good judgement (wish I had a little more of that . . .).

Only reason I bust folks on this is, while your paying off (or down) the camera over the next 3 months you are getting zero experience with all (or at least most of) the things you bought for in the first place. And trust me, it is going to take you a little while to become familiar with it once you have a P2.

Heck, tell your dealer I said if he was a good bloke he'd just throw one in . . . ;-0

Oh sure just throw in a p2 card, maybe he'll include a ferrari hehe, at the moment in the UK anyway they cost a bomb still.

Future proofing an investment of 3k plus is worth living without p2 for 3 months etc.

But then u see, my clients over here still only really need/want SD, but for my creative work im wanting HD, so its all good, cos my more ambitious creative work is in preprod anyway.

I don't reckon using P2 cards are hard to learn, its just adjusting how one works to utilise their storage limitations etc etc.

Of course you are correct. Just shove the old card into the slot, that's about it.

It's all those other buttons and knobs that won't do anything when you press 'em (without a P2 installed) that I was referring to.

I didn't mean to beat you to death with the concept--I'll step off here. Best of luck, enjoy your new camera.
