Japanese HVX - in the UK cheaper BUT...

There is a grey market HVX-200 from japan going pretty cheap from a business based in dundee in Scotland (just some miles where i live)

http://www.digital-4-u.co.uk/

They also sell on ebay, with roughly 580 sales and 99.8%positive feedback.

Hmm i ponder, let me quote from their warranty info,

'Yes, you will receive an MACK extended international manufacture warranty certificate within 30 days after you received the camera or camcorder from us. then, you must register the extended warranty with MACK online, the full instruction will come to you with that certificate.'

(rest of the info is here) http://www.digital-4-u.co.uk/ac/3yearwarranty.html

So, as always this camera there selling is considerably cheaper. Point though is, that for the more expensive cameras, if you live locally as i do for them, then you need pay nothing until the camera is delivered personally (by one of their staff) for you to check.

So what you reckon guys? The guy said there hvx200's are from japan, does this mean the menu's and buttons will have no english readableness (is that a ridiculous question even lol)

Anyway your thoughts gentlemen!

All smells a bit fishy to me......

Firstly its just not good when a company that claims to be professional has a "4U" in its company name well in my view anyway!

Secondly, there no such thing as "VAT free" in Euroland for non business registered individuals..... be careful that they don't apply VAT to the price quoted. Come to think of it if its from Japan they might try and add import duty as well.... insult/injury spring to mind ;)

The spelling and grammar is appalling in the warrantee section.... again is this something that you'd expect from a company selling professional equipment? Also it appears that there attitude to warrantee claims is "sod off and deal with another company"

The only slight redeeming thing is that they do except credit cards which means that the CC company can be held liable under Section 75 of the consumer credit Act if this company defaults.

Nobody wants to pay more than they have to for equipment but at the end of the day if things go belly up its you thats going to have to deal with it... is the small saving worth it?

My PERSONAL advice..... "Walk away!"

Indy....

Ya well, i was talking to the chap, and for locals it can be delivered and inspected. That said it is delivered by one of their staff, so it has already cleared whatever VAT and customs before reaching me apparently.

Then apparently you can inspect it for approximately an hour, before going ahead.

Btw what is this mack warranty all about then? Is that actually legit?

No idea, but at the end of the day its another layer you'd have to negotiate if you needed a warrantee repair.

As I said my advice would be to walk away!

Mack is a fairly reputable seller of international warranties. They are used by B+H photo video in New York (www.bhphotovideo.com) as well as other large companies. You should check out the mack website on the internet for details (www.mackcam.com).

You will need to pay for all shipping costs (including return shipping) so make sure that there is an authorized repair center nearby or you will have to ship the camera to New Jersey.

That said, I don't think many people on these boards will recommend buying a grey market camera. I know it seems like you are saving a lot of money at first, but at the end of the day it's usually not worth it.

All the HVXs I've seen in Japan are NTSC. This is NTSC land, so, my guess is that it's intended for Singapore/China. In general, the HVX is cheaper here!
