Thanks To God for insurance

Well I finally got my camera back tuesday after nearly 2 painful months of waiting for Panasonic to get the needed parts in stock again. First a holder blind sheet, 6 weeks, and then the entire lens unit, focus ring, zoom the whole thing was done. And the cost, 1500 for parts and labour. I have a great tenants policy which costs me 90 a year for my gear and has zero deductible. I'm thorougly impressed with my insurance, but everyone else has been dropping the ball lately forcing me to buy another camera just to get my film done on time. The service center failed to wire the top part of the camera for the mic, record swich, zoom, and record lamp all on the handle of the dvx. I love driving 2 hours just to let them correct their screw up. This entire disaster could have been averted had I never let my camera leave my hands in the first place and like they say, once they try to fix it, it never works the same ever again.

WOW! Tyler, let me ask you something, I also have a tenants insurance policy, I pay like 200 dollars a year, just this pass weekend my camera fell and the lens broke off.. thankfully I was able to put it back together myself.. it's not at 100% but it will do for now, I only have a few more weeks to finish my latest film..

My question is, Renters insurance don't cover physical damage right? Only theft? Correct? And also this accident happened out of the house, where did your accident happen.. You must have a hell of an insurance carrier, who are they?

You think I should report my camera breaking to see if they could fix it back to original form, I was afraid because it was physical damage they wouldn't cover it, I guess it depends on the insurance carrier. Thanks for any advice you may have, and sorry about you going through hell to get it fix, but hey atleast you got it fix.

if you have it on your tenants policy like i do, and your camera is not being used for commercial use then technically it should be covered for everything. Ask your insurance agent for a wording on your policy, the term is Scheduling. If you schedule an item then there is no deductible for anything. If my camera drops because of negligence, acts of god, theft etc. its completely covered by them. If i drop a battery in the pacific ocean, i'm covered. It won't be covered if its having work done one it, and if it's being used for commercial purposes then the entire policy is void.

I'm in canada so my provider is wawanesa. Generally most providers are similar unless its government regulated like in the case of ICBC in BC then you will probably get screwed on any claims you have. Call your provider today and tell them exactly what happened, remember if its commercial use and not just a short film for fun then you will be S.O.L. That's why insurance is there for. You pay and pay and pay. make them work for you, it's not like these company's aren't worth millions upon millions of dollars.

Just make sure there is no record of you making money from the camera as these type of policies do not cover commercial use... You shoot a wedding and get $500 you are not eligible...

so the entire policy is void if you shoot on wedding and get piad? or is the policy only void for the time during the shooting of the wedding? thanks

I also might add that my policy covers me worldwide. If i get robbed in Brazil, then i'm covered.

wow. what's your insurers name? loking for a good insurance but having a hard time finding one that doesn't charge me 500 a year.

its a canadian company, so i don't think they cover people who live out of the country. But google wawanesa, maybe they have an american office ??

For most insurance ANY commercial use voids the coverage. In most cases you will be fine unless your job is "Director" "freelancer" etc. and the gear isnt stolen on location. I had a friend doing a music video and someone stole his B camera and he was denied coverage.

Anyone has a recommendation of a insurance policy to cover commercial use? And also who to stay away from?
