HVX with and without M2 Test Footage

To kind of go back a few posts, I think it is interesting what Haakon said about the HVX looking like it is equal to the 28mm lens, Haakon, you don't know how just very close you are.
Remember everyone, a 28mm lens at 2.8 is a 28mm lens at 2.8 is a 28mm lens at 2.8. :) The only thing that is changing is your field of view. Remember also, the HVX does not have a 32-400mm lens, it has 4.5-55mm lens, or something around that. So when you shoot with the DVX at 28mm your depth of field will be the same as if you shoot with a 35mm lens at 28mm, the difference is that on the DVX lens at 28mm this is a semi telephoto field of view, whereas on the 35mm 28mm lens, you have a very wide angle view. Hope this makes sense and can clear up some confusion.

Erm... what did I say about a 28mm lens? I don't think you have the right guy...

Shooting with wider lenses and stopping them down (increasing the F-stop number) will increase the DOF (give you more area in focus). Of course, the more you stop down, the darker the image gets so the more light you need (and the HVX+M2 combo eats up a lot of light to begin with).

The entire purpose of using the M2 is to get shallow DOF equivalent to that of traditional 35mm lenses. If you don't like shallow DOF, you probably shouldn't invest in an M2. :)

I was wondering. Is there any difference from the pro and DIY version of the M2, construction wise? Is there any other glass element between the lens and the GG that isn't mentioned in the DIY guide?

Ooooh Scharky, I think the penny just dropped (and it had a hard time fitting through the slot). Good post, thanks.

So basically when I'm at 20x with my xl2 the dof is the equivalent of 108mm in the 35mm realm (but an equiv fov of 846mm). And with a DVX/HVX at 10x you'd be getting the dof equiv of 45mm (fov equiv 325mm). That seems obvious now.

Now when using a 35mm adapter, if you need to zoom in to avoid vignetting, let's say 2x, is there an equation which will tells us what the fov becomes (in 35mm equiv). Would you then have a 56mm fov when using a 28mm lens? (28mm x 2)

For those using an adapter, how much do you need to zoom in?

Nice samples. I'm still a bit on the fence about the adapters. I think they are great for what they do and for delivering something more cinematic and in a side by side... one looks more pleasing and the HVX looks more like stilted video... but there's something funny that they do to the images that you don't get with a still camera or with a film camera. Kind of an in-between focus.. and added softness. Some are more dramatic than others.. and some of the shots I've seen kind of draw the attention away from the focused area by the other weird focus on the images... Not sure if I'm making sense.. and I can think that it's just something new to get used to for me. Maybe the more I would see it.. then I'd be able to appreciate it.

I do think that the exterior stuff I've seen has also been spectacular and the cleanest.. focused edge to edge...

One last thing.. What ever happened to that cinemek adapter? That stuff looked sweet, but will it ever come out?

Thanks all and I'm going to get one.. probably, just have to figure it all out...

I am not in love with the very very shallow DOF here...

What i see here though is an exellent camera operator who knows exactly how to expose and makes the HVX shine.

Good job Brian !

BTW, i think the M2 is the sharpest looking 35mm adapter.

Brian, could you frame the res chart properly to measure the res with and without the M2 ?

The resolving power seems great.

Light Loss?

Light Loss?

Hi Brian

Some questions about your tests.

Is the aperture on your HVX constant between the inclusion and exclusion of the adapter? Is it open all the way? Is that a 1000 watt lamp?

Was your shutter on?

If you did change f-stop by how much? ie Could you estimate the light loss do to the adapter.

Thanks

P.S.- Very impressive images by the way. I dont know why but the skin tones even seem better with the adapter.

Took me a little over 6 weeks. It's a lonnng wait (especially since they take your money at the beginning). At first you chalk it up to them being an indie company and doing everything by hand, but around week 4 or 5 you really start to go insane. All I can say is that despite the ridiculous order time (I thought by now they were supposed to have all of the parts on-hand - and it's really not THAT complicated of a device!), the wait is worth it. Just look at the amazing results people are getting!

Just don't schedule a shoot for 7 weeks from today or you'll be sweating bullets (and giving yourself an ulcer!) like I did!!

Redrock products are not built by hand in a garage somewhere:) We have a professional manufacturing facility. The lead time is simply due to demand - everytime we ramp up to build extra product, people want far more than we can deliver. Not an excuse, but just the current reality. that's why we say our lead time is an estimated 4-6 weeks. Depending on supply and demand, the time can be shorter or longer. We always recommend scheduling productions only when you have the adapter in your hands and are comfortable with its operation.

We are working on a plan right now that will put lead time less than one week by end of summer.

Thanks

Brian

Cinemek went out of business. One of the guys is cleaning carpets for a living now, and the other guy went to jail or got deported or something. That's the official word.

But, on the bright side, they are still taking pre-order positions. The only problem is that you'll have to wait forever.

Thanks for the responses guys. I would like to shoot the res charts "correctly" but I don't really now the process for doing it. Can some one point me to a site the outlines how to set it all up? I got confused especially when on the wide angle because it's impossible to get the chart full frame because it's too close to the camera and then can't focus.

A couple of notes since then:

I went to the RedRock even on Sunday and first let me say that these RedRock guys are amazing and just about the best at customer support. They helped me fine tune my settings until I had it just right. My next tests will be even sharper and a better representation of what the M2 can do.

As for light loss, I can just remember generally, but when the M2 was on I had the camera wide open and each lens was also wide open (1.4, 1.8. 2.0) When the M2 was I seemed to remember pulling the iris to about f4.

As for lighting, the work light was 2-500watt bulbs so basically a 1K hitting me. That was the only light in the room.

Don't know if I'm answering everyone's questions or not, but like I said. Better tests to come!

Ouch... glad I didn't put any money on that one then!

seriously??? :(

HaHa, Brian that was awesome. Truly a crack-up watching you have a conversation with the air, such an interesting group we film makers are lol.

I should be receiving my micro ff this thrusday, and my M2 should ship later this week. I'll be puttimg together a test similar to this incorporating nude super models, that is if Mr. Valente can get it out to me in time, wink, wink.

What are you thoughts on the Micro FF?

How long is the set-up time?

Are there any lens you're considering now that you've got it in your hands?

uh, is that a red M2?!

And also, Redrock has no official stance on the use of nude supermodels, but on the other hand, .... dang man!

Mr. Valente you're a god! Woke up this morning, checked my email and there we go, my M2 has been shipped and should arrive late this week or early next week!

Yup, that's an HVX'd out red M2 logo. :costumed-smiley-047

Haha, I think I failed to mention the fact that the nude super models are 1/8 scale, nevetheless, they'll be nude damnit! :)
