BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE P2 - a production journal on P2 workflow

Nice one Chris

Liked it a lot, I'm personally sitting on the fence with P2 as it is a bit pricey right now, perhaps in a year I will get on board.

But I really enjoyed your journal, a good read, very entertaining, especially the bit about 'stings' ;)

Thanks Steve,

We are completely on the P2 side of the fence and look forward to larger P2 cards... It takes some getting used to, but if you protect your footage, it's a beautiful thing.

Yeah, I laid down and placed my wrist on a fire ant nest... I was so focused though, I just kept going... battle wounds :)

regards,

chris

So, for a dual back-up -- how did you do it? Just off-loaded every P2 card to more than 1 P2 Store? Etc?

We just cycled each card from camera into P2 store back up 1 and from there into P2 store back up 2, finally back to camera for deleting by the camera operators.

P2 is a beautiful thing and worth the investment. Generally speaking, instead of focusing on what you "can't" do with it, start focusing on what you "can" do with it. You will be amazed. :)

Chris,
Welcome to the south,..... Hope your experience was a good one. Thanks for taking the time to post your journal..... Real World experiences are the most valuable. How did you ultimately archive the footage? Is there a link to the movie?
Regards,
Barry

We had a great time in the south, unfortunately our trip was very short. I would have loved to spend some time in Atlanta.

The movie is on the IMDB. They just finished a 10 day shoot in South Carolina and will return to Los Angeles to finsih out the shoot. My assistant editor has been working on the files and I intend to begin the edit shortly. I'll post a trailer as soon as I finish one :)

chris

Nice writup, that was a fun shoot!

We kept your settings for the following shoot as well.

Hey Bro,

Thanks again for you help on the shoot, I tried to private message you here, but you've filled your quota for space... might want to delete a few messages.

Hope all is well?

The only reason to use P2 stores instead of a laptop with external drives is the extra portability.

You can copy a p2 card to 2 external harddrives in 4 minutes (4 gig) -

I agree that, as we stated in the article we thought it was an excellent option, just to cumbersome for our shoot.

Also, I read in American Cinematographer an article by Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm, "... when removing the MXF wrapper and transcoding the P2 footage files from MXF to QuickTime, it's best to do so on a G5, because it will create less visible compression than a G4."

I sure thought that was strange, but I have no problem complying so I do it.

thats not only strange - it is wrong information. compression is algorithm based so the speed or a processor can not effect the final results. It might take less time on a g5 OR the playback might be smoother (making you think the compression was better) - but this is 100% clearly misinformation.

I was taken back by it, but it's a reputable magazine... If they truly are wrong, someone should contact them and let them know...

Ya I cleared out those PM's, Did all the footage make it to you intact and to your liking? It was a sweet 10 days had a lot of fun and got some pretty good stories now.
