Streaming capture shoot options direct to FW drive

I can't seem to decipher if I can shoot (preferably 720p24p) streaming/capturing directly to attached Firewire drive. I think the answer is "no" but I'm not sure. Can someone point my to info on this? Thanks.

I think each person will have different outcomes...best is to try it out yourself on a test capture on your system.

BTW, what is your current capture setup? What system are you running?

I'm just trying to see if it feasible to shoot/capture directly to a FAT32 formatted drive via FW. Not sure if it is possible.

Its possible if it is mounted in your OS, but depending on the speed of the OS and your own operating enviornments will determine if it will capture usable footage (dropped frames, audio drop outs...etc...)

oh ya, sorry, i assumed that was implied, but the HD obviously has to be connected to a COMPUTER, and then using something like FCP or another NLE, you capture through that into the correct codec settings of the camera

Yes, you can record directly from the camera into FCP. But on a PowerBook or MacBook, there's a trick to it.

You have to record to an external Firewire drive. But you can't have the camera and drive share the one Firewire buss (all ports share one buss). So you have to get a PC card that gives you another Firewire port, this will have it's own buss, too.

Ive had no problems capturing on my MBP 2.0ghz 15inch directly onto the internal HDD in 1080 60i.

Capture lengths have been up to 12 minutes out in the field shooting and not a single dropped frame.

And im using the 5400rpm 100gb HDD in my MBP

What I want to know--

Can you record 720p/24p and 720p/60p via this method. That's all I want to know.

Going to get a MacBook and have a terrabyte of external storage just waiting to be used.

Wait until you try to edit that stuff when you get a lot more footage. You "can" do it directly to the internal drive, but it's not the best work flow. Not to mention you'll fill that system drive up pretty fast. But, do what works for you.

Yes, you can. But, remember that the HVX200 is sending everything at 60fps through that firewire cable. You'll have to do pulldown after the fact, I believe.

Ben, ya i dont work off of the internal HDD, but we are literally on the streets and in the hills when we capture and having an external HDD is not realistic.

The night before our shoots i make sure to have about 30 gigs free for capturing. (damn apple apps take alot of space; 35+ gigs for Garageband + loops alone) 30 minutes is usually enough till lunch time rolls around. I plug in and transfer either to the iPod HDD for a temp hold, or i transfer to an external FW drive. then we check all the files again and then delete off of the laptop HDD.

Hard enough to lug the laptop and find a place to put it or hold it for a good 10 minutes next to the camera for capturing, that bringing another drive along wouldnt be suitable. Especially with no where to plug it in.

We're just using an FS-100, makes life a lot easier. But your method works! Like I say, if it works, use it!

Does it work if you attach the camera via FW buss and the drive via USB2? Does that solve the single buss problem?

What pulldown?

Confused.
