SG35 Just Arrived - Test Footage

My SG35 (I think the last one - now everything will be the SGPro) arrived this week. After Wayne helped me get it set up properly - I took some test footage last night. One thing I didn't do was turn OIS off. That explains some of the jerky pans and some of the lost corners at the end as well. I think I might have pulled the Zoom back accidentally on the last shots of 1 of our cats. I had everything set to Z72, F12 until then. I think the zoom came out to 68 or so for those shots, and the edges show that.

All said - this is just natural light on a cloudy evening in Ohio. And the inside is just a single floor lamp over the couch! Shot with NIKON 50mm 1.4.

This is gonna be FUN! Thanks Wayne!!

Every time I see footage with the SG, I'm AMAZED. I want one, dammit.

soon. must.... be......... patient...........arggg...

So, is that all natural, or did you do some color correction in post?

No CC - didn't have time! This was just a quick test. Outside was majorly overcast and it was evening. Inside was a simple lamp in the room.

Price? PM Wayne Kinney - the SGPro is more expensive - but it's also got plenty of improvements. Mine was based on the old price back in Jan. (very reasonable considering the home made rail system that was included!)

That song is a Royalty Free bit by David Byrne - a friend turned me on to a site where artists upload 'loops' that can be altered into 'mixes' and used for stuff. That's the raw loop. http://ccmixter.org/freestylemix/people/wired

Footage looks great. I know this isn't about the footage, but
are all the songs on that site royalty free ?

Kind of. There's a long description of a 'usage agreement' on the site. I think it says something like - you need to ALTER the song and make it your own mix - then you can use it. There are some sample mixes up there. Kind of a cool concept.

MrP, that stuff looks great. Made that crappy Ohio weather not look so bad. So, was it easy to use and put on?

Did you notice some pretty wicked barrell distortion? Mainly the top-left corners?

Yes - Top left and top right in the later footage. I think I had zoomed out accidentally at that point.

I have also noticed that with the camera level - the distortion is barely noticeable when at my Z72, Focus 12 setting that I have arrived at. If I were to shoot up, like I did for that shot of the cat, or down - and I have a straight line on the edge of the screen like that doorframe - it is very noticeable. Makes sense, though.

So the key so far with testing is to make sure I keep the settings at what I found to be the optimal so far - and to shoot level or watch the framing of the shots. The distortion is normal with the adapter.

Hopefully, with practice, using it to increase the DOF when needed - will draw the attention to the proper part of the screen, as well!

the secret tot his adapter is to set it up properly. its very sensitive to being out of alignment.

It took me 4 hours to tweak my Sgpro(the sg35 big brother).

its a great machine becaus it puts no stress on your camera at all. you camerea infact is not connected to the GG box in anyway. it just sits on rails, looking into an achromat.

Only 4 hours! ;-) I'm still tweaking! (Actually, I think I'm set - but need to get it in some good light for another round of tests)

It's definitely sitting pretty solid right now.
