The HVX has taken some tough criticism...

. My indespensibles are my fig rig with Varizoom controller...along a couple reflectors.

Are you using the Rock-PZFI or the Stealth-PZFI? Any comments on either? Thanks.

I can also confirm that in bright sunlight the HVX kicks the JVC out the park. I shot 2 weeks on an indi feature and posted some footage on this site to show the glory of the HVX... On the project the editor told me he had to dial down the color of my HVX to match the JVC because one looked bright and colorful and one was the JVC which just doesn't hold up.

I'd love to put up some footage from both but the director/DP gave me a chewing out for posting footage before it's time, I guess...

I'd say that the JVC is actually better indoors and low-light in comparision but.. when it's correctly exposed with enough light... the HVX kicks the tail off the JVC..

Not until Monday Ash! Right?

I use an HVX quite a bit... I got another to use as a "b" unit and to rent out. So HYPE AWAY people, it makes renting easier!!!!!

Here is another thing to consider... the beauty of forums like this is that everyone can address issues and help find workarounds, etc. The problem is that it makes everyone HYPER aware of any "issues" Take for instance, noise. I surmise that most people who are really bothered by the noise of the HVX are LOOKING for it do to the hightened awareness. Is the HVX noisy? Yes... but you can work around it and mask it and even avoid it in many situations. The same is true of HDV, people are looking for problematic areas and ignoring the 99% of footage that looks darn good.

With ANY 1/3" CCD camera there will always be compromises, it is up to the manufacturer where to steer the camera and up to the users to choose the right one for the job and learn to work around the various issues each camera has.

Iv'e been thinking hard about getting the Fig Rig, the stuff I've seen shot with it is so smooth; How do you rate it?

I absolutely adore the fig rig. I find it's reduced most of my need for sticks except for a straight talking head interview. I have a slightly modified setup with a very compact monopod clamped to the bottom. Acts as a counterweight and I can pop it out and I have a pretty good facimile of a tripod. I did a shoot recently in a very busy kitchen hanging the thing over steaming pots of pasta a cauldrons of pouring cheese sauce. I was able to get into and around places that I never could have managed handheld in a steady fashion. I should point out that I'm a pretty shaky shooter hand held so I appreciate this thing more than some human tripod with a shoulder cam might.

I'm using the Stealth PZFI. I haven't used the Rock although I have used a Manfrotto controller. I like the fact that the Stealth focus, iris and zoom are all operable from my right hand. I'd like a bigger focus knob and I'd LOVE to have a button to operate the focus assist. I'd pay a whole lot for a retrofit for such a button.

I do think that also people like to throw stones and knock of the leader.. and this camera is the leader in Sales.
That as an excellent point, when i was looking for my HVX, I noticed that while there was a long waiting list for it. I also noticed that all the other HDV camera's were in stock... I think that say's alot!!

I'm sold:crybaby: I couldn't find one for salivating.

I sit here everyday and keep seeing the HVX footage rolling in. I do have some HDV footage up now but it does not compare. Go look at the work of "Robb Stan" an outstanding HVX shooter from Florida. And Bob Fagen sent some stunning rowing footage that will be posted in a few weeks!

Gordon, you need to reread that article. Walter did not do anything with the JVC that it doesn't do well. Note he never shot in 24P mode and he didn't talk deeply about working with the footage. The pictures that show the comparison show excessive detail enhancement on the JVC. The article helped Walter resolbve his own buyers remorse. Look at the first post in this thread from Movie Stunts. He sold his JVC and bought the HVX. The difference between the camers is quite dramatic. Admittedly you do need to be hooked on the P2 concept or you will be in Tape Envy for ever. ;-)

Good Luck,

Jan
Thanks Jan, I have horror stories of my own with JVC, my dv-500 had numerous problems with it's VTR and after sending it in to them numerous times for repair under warranty(it was never fixed) I caved in and bought a Firestore so I could get reliable footage. When I got my new JVC it too had problems (new). Their customer service sucks, their factory trained repair men... Well I already mentioned that.

After my experience with a KY-1900 and 3/4" JVC equipment (showing my age here!) I would never buy another JVC product.

All footage from these two gentleman were shot with HVX.

And many more are coming up!

That footage is nice but no better than stuff I have seen from the JVC or the XLH. There is SOOOO much ignorance about HDV from people who never really use it. I am not a big fan of it but it is viable and works in most all situations.

I think the HVX is in high demand do to limited supply but I suspect the Sony HDV cams are by far the sales leader in 1/3" CCD world. I never really understood this argument anyway as it often came up in the DVX/XL2 debates. It is like saying that the Ford Focus sold 10 times as much as the Porsche 911 so that means the Ford is better...

Bit late but....

Not to long ago I shot a little production with two crews, me with my DVX100 the other with a JVC 5100 when I looked at the edit I was surprised to see the mostly used my stuff. Probly because the JVC didn't look as fresh and nice as the DVX.

Time to go check out the HVX this week i guess :P

I don't think your analogy works. The Ford Focus and the Porsche 911 are not in the same automobile class -- nor are their retail prices comparable. However, the DVX/XL2 debates are about cameras that are similarly priced. Therefore, the debate about which is better "DVX or XL2" is legit, while "Ford or Porsche" is not.
