import on mac causes bad artifacting??!?

Just got my new macbook pro, and I tried to do a direct import from the p2 into final cut, and I get crazy artifacts every few frames..

I also tried copying from the p2 to an external firewire drive first, and then importing. Same problem.

Offloading to a usb-to-go drive or offloading to a pc via direct connect of the hvx and then importing results in clean files..

The Camera was daisy chained behind an external firewire drive, which is my main editing drive..

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I saw something like that on clips that were on the P2 card that Panasonic sent me as a demo. It was only on clips on 1 of the 2 cards. I have not been able to reproduce it in any of my tests.

That happened to me. check out my post

all in all, i think it was because of faulty firewire cables or my slow g4 was doing it. I tried reimporting it on a better computer with better cables and my footage was fine. DO NOT DELETE YOUR FOOTAGE. it is probobly salvagable. Here was my footage before.

try different cables. try different computer. let me know if you figure it out.

quick extra note. Try to copy or import the footage straight to your desktop or internal HD. Do not do any external drives.

also, dont daisy chain.

The footage is fine. I was able to offload to USB-OnTheGo Drive, and firewire drie connected directly, and then import into the mac from that. I have also offloaded via usb and firewire to a PC successfully. Could be the daisy chain(but then the Panasonic is a POS :) ), or bad cable (again I would expect to see some type of error while copying, not just corrupt files)

Tried changing the firewire drive, and things appeared to work... I dont have time to follow up more right now... but the drive that was giving me trouble was a bus powered drive, so perhaps it was drawing too much current and causing some bus problems..

Never daisy chain a camera off a FW drive. Was this recorded directly to P2 cards, or directly to the FW drive?

Hi... i have had the same problems injesting to laptop as well. I posted this a few weeks ago. It only happenned on one occasion. After that incident i try not to move my laptop around during shoot while injesting the p2 cards at the same time and keeping my battery of the laptop at a healthy level. Everything i injested after these check were fine.

Just don't daisy chain - that stopped the problem for me - if you must capture straight to comp drive and then transfer off

Aside from all those odd specks, it looks like the problem also inverted the image of the guy on the bike!

Seriously, hope you're able to definitely track down your problem.

Were you able to reproduce the error? If so then that would be a relief as it would pinpoint the source of the trouble.
