So if someone buys the 160 and later wants the 320
they could ship the 160 back to Spec-Comm and get it upgraded (by replacing the HDD)
correct?

HOw much is the upgrade and the turnaround?

Yes, you would ship it to us and we would ADD a HDD and the RAID circuitry. Can't answer the price and turn around question yet though.

Yes, the Tripod Plate is an option. I'm not sure what you are asking about the mounting holes? Do you want to mount more than one adapter plate at a time?

David

Thanks a lot David,

The holes I mentioned are the bottom camera holes, as I understand, if I mount the Cine porter down the camera, I have to buy a tripod plate in order to mount both to a tripod?

Again, thanks !

Yes, you are correct. The Tripod adapter plate has multiple holes of the 2 standard sizes down it's length. We'll have a picture of it, as well as pricing, when the accessories section goes up. You can see a little bit of it in the pictures now.

It has NOTHING to do with DVI as you know it. Don't try to plug a DVI ANYTHING into it.

What will this connector (or the new version connector that may be in the production model) be used for? I was all stoked that we could monitor through DVI.

This is the connection for the interface card.

A big plus is to make the cord as long as possible, maybe even 3ft to 5 ft long. So the cineporter could be kept flexible i.e. putting the unit on a belt or putting the unit as a counter weight on the varizoom support etc.

Since the cord is proprietary this would be a plus.

Is there anyone on the list who want the PAL version, but havent specified it?

The P2 is format don't specify recording format, so there is no PAL version.

The version for sale in EU will require certain certifications.

Really?

Daivd (at Spec-comm), care to comment on this? The Cineporter website says nothing about this.

It only says:
Compatible Devices
AG-HVX200, AJ-SPX800(Coming Soon)
AJ-SPC700(Coming Soon)

(It does not say AG-HVX200E )

Is the Cineporter completely region independent (NTSC / PAL)?
If thats the case, why not sell directly to buyers in europe?
Why "wait" for a distribution channel?
Why not just use Fedex?

As I've mentioned earlier, the CinePorter™ will be universal, however, we expect that testing with European cameras will delay export to slightly after the US release. There are a couple of minor differences we may need to address. If so we will issue a firmware update for all units to be compatible.

There are also some standards we will have to meet to sell in the European market. We will be able to sell a couple of units direct, such as those on the group buy list, but we have requests for thousands outside of US and we have to meet export laws and set up dealers that we could train to handle most service issues. There really is a lot to this and we have export attorneys working things out.

I hope this helps,

David

David, good decision on reconsidering form factor. Design is important even if it's a rugged unit. Design has to be their. Remember that small company called Apple?

any comments on teh extended cord? 5ft or so for movability and flexibility?

perfect. length.

Any news on the release date? I understand suppliers could delay things sometimes but would you be bold enough to give us an estimated time other than Q3?

We've been saying "by the end of Summer." I would like to see units shipping by IBC. I hate to quote a date and then to keep changing it. Sometimes what seems like a minor thing can cause long delays.

I hope this helps, just don't quote me on it. :)

big question: how will the cineporter keep track of shots, i.e.
(first shot is made at 6:00 3 minutes
second is made at 6:20 4 minutes
third is made...)

how will i keep track of say 30 shots (6 scenes) within the cineporter if I'm continuosly recording without off loading? The purpose of such a unit is to record without worrying about offloading to your mac everytime you complete a shot. offloading at the end of the day or in long intervals is what most of us want or at least what I'm looking for.

this could turn into a nightmare if not organized correctly. There has to be a naming scheme in place. Image 8 scenes and 40shots then offloading to my mac for editing. how do i know what is what without having to look at every clip in order to organize?

I was thinking that it would record timecode, so you keep track of what has been recorded by keeping TC notes as you record (that's why there are PA's!).

I've mentioned earlier that we are still working on the file structure. We will be adding more features as time goes on. Currently and subject to change, a separate directory is created on the HDD for each 4Gb virtual P2 card. Not a partition with a separate drive letter like on a P2 store, but a uniquely named folder. The camera writes in 4GB chunks and links them together through meta data. You will notice that an 8GB card contains 2 4GB clips even though you were recording continuously. The camera creates a separate clip every time you stop and start as well. We are keeping the naming convention the same as P2 cards for now. We are also working on managing the files ourselves, but that takes processing power and more code and will likely not be included in the initial release. We are also looking into external software that would help manage things once the CinePorter™ is connected to your NLE.

This is more than I wanted to say because it's the part that is not yet finished, so I hope it helps,

David

Thanks again for your comments.

You're welcome. Thank for the questions. There are a million things involved with this project and I'm not spending a lot of time with the engineering team, so if you need clarification on anything I can try and get it for you. I'm not usually this involved with any one project, since there are so many, but this is my favorite and it has my full backing. You could call it my "pet" project, because I really believe in it. That's why I'm here. :love4:

Thank you for your support,

David

Thanks. If you guys do it right, as it seems, it will be a runaway hit. Pricing is always a concern but as long as it's full prove than we could save our coins adn get this unit.

question:

When are the 4GB chunks linked together, during off loading to an external drive? Or is a third party app required? Is your system FULLY supported by FCP (importing, linking etc)?
