A Movie Fan's Greatest Invention

As I was driving to work I was listening to NPR and there was a story on this company called NaturalNano. They have found these nano tubes in a natural clay in Utah and they encoded all these metals into these tubes. The metals they encode can block radio/cell signals. They then mixed this with paint which created a cell phone blocking paint. You can coat a whole room with this and when you flip the switch it will block all cell phone signals.

Well, the major theater chains are now lobbying the government to allow them to use this in their theaters. Other industries, like churches, have shown extreme interests in this technology. There are laws that make it illegal to intentionally block any frequency/transmission that is licensed by the FCC, but hopefully the theater owners prevail, one less distraction when out at the movies.

I'm against cell phone blocking. Of course, its EXTREMELY annoying when someone's cell goes off in a theater, but there are very good reasons to not block them. Freak accidents and emergencies come out of nowhere, so you never know when you need to contact someone/or be contacted. It's an interesting idea, but hopefully won't be passed.

No more cell phones in movies and churches! That would be great! While the theaters have less phones ringing now than they did 5 years ago, I've noticed a disturbing trend of kids texting while in the theater. You can see the bright light of the screen from the back row of the theater. This would mostly take care of that too!

I heard the same story on NPR. Interesting stuff.

My wife and I used to go to the movies every week but our experience in the movie theaters from; talking, to cellphones, to bad projectionists, has us watching movies at home these days. :(

Not only if they could make paint that would make people shut up!

And I agree with Zach, blocking RF carries huge risks. Not having cellphone when there's an emergency in a theater is one thing, but how about when the firefighters and medic's radios don't work in there either? My good friend is a volunteer firefighter, he carries a pager on him at all times. When he goes into the theater, he sets it on silet. I won't bug anyone, but if he needs to repsond, he can quietly leave without disturbing anyone.

In Finland, were cellphones have been mainstream for years (even every 5 year old has one), people have done a good job of learning how to be polite with them. I honestly can't remember the last time I heard a phone go off in a theater there. You occasionaly see someone answer one if you happen to glance around, but that's it. They have it on silet, and if they answer they whispter 'I'll call youback', or glace at the caller and just redphone. It's never disturbing.

I think blocking the communications is a bad idea, and we should leave the chanels open for those that need them, while learning how to be responsible about it too.

Of course, 20 years ago no one had a cell phone and managed to go to the movies without any problem.

I completely agree.

Yeah, but that was then and this is now. I don't want more gov't restrictions.

This thread is dangerously close to being political.

I agree as well, it's a novel idea that will never pass (I don't think it will at least) and I only presented it as such, a novel idea, so no politics here.

Having been to Europe on occasion, people there are generally more respectful than your average American here in my hometown. I'm not trying to start an argument, but it gets old when you try to enjoy a night out and people and their vast ignorance gets in the way.

I guess what we need is nano-technology that will teach people respect and manners, that'll be the day!

Yeah, it is a cool idea. And I can see it would be usefull in some places too.

One idea I heard of a while back was the exact opposite of the blocking paint. It was a transmitter that would broadcast a signal to make all phones and pagers ring. It would be fired off once about 2 mins before the movie starts, just as a reminder for poeple to put them on silet.
