Z1U manual iris issue

We're shooting on the Z1U, everything on manual, but are still finding the camera adjusts for varying light conditions, as if were on automatic. For example, if we're shooting a room with the subject standing by the window, when we frame him to have more of the window showing the rest of the room interior remains dark. However, if we frame him with more of the room showing, the dark room lights up significantly. This isn't our definition of manual.

We haven't been able to find any menu setting that allows us to remove this automatic feature. Anyone know how?

Najeeb,

First, set the camera into AUTO/MAN mode (middle switch position). Next, press each of the IRIS, GAIN, SHUTTER SPEED and WTE BAL buttons until their value shows up along the bottom of the LCD display.

If any one of these isn't indicated, the camera will use that function to adjust exposure. We've shot thousands of hours on these cameras, so if you have any questions at all, please feel free to PM me!

Cheers,

I noticed the same thing when I tried it out at B&H. When I asked the salesperson, he couldn't figure it out either. He just suggested messing with the shutter speed, but that is not the same thing. What's up with that?

Obviously you had set iris to <2.8 and you confuse the iris change through zoom change (which is natural to any camera if you set the apperture too high) with the auto function.

He was a typical salesman! :)

Yeah, almost every time you power up you need to set all these buttons to manual mode. If you don't, the camera just makes up for the others by adjusting whichever is still in auto mode.

I haven't had this problem on my Z1. You may want to check the small internal battery. When it dies, the camera resets everything when it's shut off and turned back on. The easiest way to know that is if it constantly asks you to re-set the internal clock.

manual iris issue

manual iris issue

Hi Folks,

Just got back two nights ago from Afghanistan where we were filming with the Z1U. I didn't have access to the internet after getting overlandfilms' response, but his solution worked perfectly for us. We thought we had everything on manual but one element - I think it may have been the white balance - didn't show up on on the screen. Once we pressed the button to make that also show up as manual everything did indeed perform as manual.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I dont think its a pain in the @$$ or anything to press the buttons... I mean really its only two right on the side. The iris and gain buttons. Just blip blip, done. I think it would be a pain if Sony had put them like way down in a menu or something.
