heat wave shot in the desert

Hello everyone, I have a project coming in this weekend shooting a group of people running marathon relay in the desert. I like to get some shot about the heat wave showing the high temperature.
Can someone tell me how to achieve the heat wave shot? Do I have to setup the specific shutter speed? Your advice will be truly appreciated.

A normal shutter speed will work just fine, basically if you can see the heat ripple, you can shoot it. The best way that I have found is to run a car for a while until the hood gets hot, and then setup your camera over the hood of the car so you can shoot through the heat wave. Another option would be to find some nice hot blacktop, but that isn't always an option.

Put a can of sterno (the camping stove solid can of fuel) below and in front of the lens. Or you could try a couple of lighters.

Shooting with a long lens (focal length) will help accentuate the heat waves too.

All of the above is good advice. We also simulated it in "Dead Line" by putting an open gas can a few feet in front of the camera; the evaporating gasoline fumes caused a nice simulation of the heat wave ripple effect. We used the gas can that was already there for the generator.

I think you will be surprised with what the DVX will capture.
I recorded a very faint rainbow that went away quickly but after I viewed the tape at home, I saw the rainbow on camera when my eye didn't see it in person.

Wasn't that the inspiration for "Love Liza?" : )
