Just used the HVX to shoot 4 commercials for The History Channel,
for their upcoming series AMERICAN EATS airing june 29th.
the promo's should hit the air around june 11th or so.

Cut the footage on FCP 5.
Color corrected/compositing/and other FX on SMOKE and FLAME.

I was the Director, and it was my call to go with the HVX200.
Camera worked flawlessly, especially when went to 18fps and up to 60.

We're just finishing post and so far all is good.

Let us know when it airs.
Also, any comments from History Channel about the footage?
Any comments from your Smoke and Flame people?
Did you convert to a format other than DVCPro100 for the edit and finishing work?
Questions, questions...

History Channel is hip to the footage, although to be honest, I didn't give them specifics on how I was gonna shoot the campaign.
They just give a bunch of $$$ and say "go do it".

HOMENYC [the smoke/flame guys] love the process.
I had a guy on set take the P2 MXF files and convert them to quicktime animation codecs.
Everyday we handed HOMENYC a drive with the clips pre-sorted, and they were able to start the compositing and editing while I was still shooting.
No tape, no logs, nothing- just digital in and start cranking!

Although to go from FCP to SMOKE, he converted the sequences to TARGA's and imported to SMOKE that way.

So were you just using FCP for conversion to quicktime or were you editing in FCP prior to sending media out to Smoke?

Also, 1080 or 720? Was it shot HD for an SD delivery or is the final product HD?
Were you green/blue screening and if so how are the keys in Smoke or Flame?

using FCP for editing, then sent media to SMOKE.

shot HD for SD delivery.
did not green/blue screen- example of FX shot below

Had a guy diving off a 3 meter diving board into chocolate...
so first he dives/jumps in cannonball style into pool
shot that with overhead jib

then same angle same jib etc
shot weight being thrown into 3' x 3' x 2' tub filled with chocolate

composited both shots in smoke.
