for dvx ..when you shoot for broadcast
is it better to shoot in interlace or progressive mode.
looking to output to dv tape and dvd.

Interlace or Progessive for Wedding, Event...especially when u require editing

I realised that shooting in progessive mode casing a lot of jerk.
especially when you slow low in motion. i understand
that is one of the cause, as i am shooting, i wont be able to predict
whether am i am going to edit this in fast or low motion effect.
according to book, interlace is more suitable for low motion,

is it alright to mix interlace with progessive footage for editing ?

I assume your using a variety of the DVX...... whilst its true that interlace is more suitable for slow motion its not to say that you cant achieve a reasonable result with progressive footage.

I have achieved suitable results for wedding (I wouldnt do it unless I really had to for other work) slowing 24pa footage to 70%. That said when shooting you should be aware of shutter speed, you dont want to be using 1/24 or 1/48 on 24p or pa footage as the slow mo will have too much motion blur..... but on the reverse end say 1/500 you will cause too much stutter. So experiement with your light and see whats the best point.

You can mix interlaced with progressive. You will need slow the interlaced down to 80% and then deinterlace. This gives an optimal slow motion effect. Rarely though can I tell what I will want to slow down in post whilst I am shooting. Sometimes I see a shot in post and think that would be nice in slow mo and would suit the mood. I wouldnt be shooting something specifically for slow motion.

Please note that the only interlaced option on a DVX (ntsc) is 60i. All other modes are progressive (just in case you werent aware).

Thanks for your comments.
For your wedding which mode do you shoot in?
for most shot, we want to slow it down to 50% or more
for the drama effect.
Hence, will it be better to shoot interlace instead.
or is there a filter that i can use?
currently i realised that when i slow in fcp
it turn out that there was jerk here and there
especially in slow motion.

it depends on the software you use to edit. but most of them can hadle both kinds of compression.
I would use interlace, because I think it is gonna be watched on TV

Shoot 24p and then use Twixor in post.

in short, i know that for tv, its better to shoot in interlace.
hence why are we going through all the trouble for progressive.
might as well, just shoot all the footage in interlace.

i realised that progessive is not so user friendly as compare to interlace
but on the weightage, that progressive got less jagged edges compare
to interlace.. as you have two frame instead of one.
On the computer, you will get to see more difference.
how about LCD TV and Plasma?

Progressive, when u try to edit the footage,
there will be jerk here and there, hence, the footage look bad.
Hence, after some trial, i think its still better to stick to interlace.
any comments.

Just pop the question to Barry.
Hope that he can answer my need.
Thats guy is awesome, love his book and dvd.
just want to know, which mode do you guys usually shoot in ?
for wedding and event. if interlace is the answer..
than why do we need progressive.
coz we want to shoot on Computer?
understand that tv, because of their tube
hence we wont see the interlace issue.

I'd go progressive unless you absolutely need that 60i "news" look.

Just something to take note.
as i shoot in progressive.
I realised when it come to editing on fcp.
where there is slow motion effect.
the frame tend to jerk.
in order to stop that.
some advice me to shoot in I mode or interlace.
while some said that i need to download
tixor.
any advice?

jerk in progressive footage

jerk in progressive footage

there is jerk in slow motion, when i edit progressive footage.
is there a solution to this in fcp. some advice to buy tixor.
is there any other solution, if i want to edit progressive footage

If you know specifically which parts you will edit as slo mo, then shoot those in 60i with 1/120th shutter speed and edit on your 24fps timeline and slow it down to 40%. Gives a great result as Barry Greens book suggests.

just to confirm,
hence for slow motion effect, its better to shoot with interlace 60i wiht 1/120 speed,
slow down to 40%. sound great.
just that for editing, sometime, we wont be sure whether do we need to
slow it down or speed it up for editing.

For post production, beside the download,
are there any other solution?

What are you broadcasting? If its like a sporting event or something similar... lecture etc. Just shoot it and edit that way... gives you some more room.

There are better engines for making slowmotion -- somewhere I saw a GREAT one using Cinema Tools and Compressor... I'll hunt for it.

But remember, proper planning. If you really want better slowmotion you should shoot that scene in 60i. I know it's a pain, but planning for shots only leads to better video.

Good luck,
