Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

Nice tip my friend.

$119 at B & H

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=87500&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

$119 on ebay too.

500 with no D is the evil twin

500D has more glass

and a diopter strength of 2.

(must.... stop.... rhyming)

So, I would be paying $119 (or under) to make my adapter look less like a rocket launcher. I will have to ponder this thought for a few days.

Of to bed. If I can just remember where it is....

nice find- I didnt know the diopter strength. +2 is perfect. I have some stuff piling up to sell on ebay, we will see how that goes and maybe I will snag one of these Canon achromats.
Yes, I was glad to see that it is a +2

Edweirdo said:
And I see you snagged the Canon C screen (I knew someone would, its as good or better than the D screen), so let us know how that goes.
Yea I snagged that bad boy quick. :)

I can't wait to give it a shot. I of course will post the outcome. I am also going to attempt (in the next few weeks) to grind my own glass. There is a "Making a Ground Glass" article is the May/June 2003 issue of Photo Techniques USA that I plan to follow. Doesn't sound to bad. We shall see. I still need to order the 3 and 5 micron aluminum oxide powder. If it works I will add it to the DVD as a GG option.

I have an EOS 650 35mm photo camera with an EF 50mm 1.8. I'm wondering if this EF lens can be used on Edweirdo's and Marlene's adaptor designs considering that they call for FD lenses?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm trying to organize a list of parts drawing from both marlene's and edweirdo's design. It seems that Marlene thinks the $200 Century Optics +7 diopters provide for a much better picture than the $25 72mm Macro filters? Is this correct? And would this CO +7 diopter be the piece used INSTEAD of the $20 58mm +10 Macros that Edweirdo's design calls for??

This is the list of materials that I think I need if I were to use th CO +7 diopter (minus the PVC pieces) with Edweirdo's design. Could someone please tell me if I have all the right pieces?

1) Canon FD 50mm 1.4 Lens $70 Ebay

2) Canon FD Mount $13 Ebay

3) Century Optics +7 diopter $200

4) Cokin 72mm A Series Ring $10 Ebay

5) Nikon F3 D GG Screen $25 ------ OR AOL Case

6) 2x 49-52mm Step Up rings $10

7) 2x 49mm UV $20

Thanks a lot!

Mike

ps, does anyone have any ideas about my last post regarding my EF lens?

Edweirdo,

Thanks so much for sharing your adaptor design. I've finally decided to try building my own adaptor, but I have a few questions that I was hoping you could answer.

I'm trying to organize a list of parts drawing from both your and Marlene's design. It seems that she thinks the $200 Century Optics +7 diopter provides for a much better picture than the $25 72mm Macro filter that she was previously using. Is this correct? And would this CO +7 diopter be the piece used INSTEAD of the $20 58mm +10 Macros that your design calls for?

This is the list of materials that I think I need if I were to use th CO +7 diopter (minus the PVC pieces) with your design. Could you please tell me if I have all the right pieces?

1) Canon FD 50mm 1.4 Lens $70 Ebay

2) Canon FD Mount $13 Ebay

3) Century Optics +7 diopter $200

4) Cokin 72mm A Series Ring $10 Ebay

5) Nikon F3 D GG Screen $25 ------ OR AOL Case

6) 2x 49-52mm Step Up rings $10

7) 2x 49mm UV $20

Also, I posted a question about EF lenses, but nobody responded. I have an EOS 650 35mm photo camera that has an EF 50mm 1.8 lens. The diameter of the camera's mount is about 2 1/2", which would be too large to mount to 2" PVC. Correct? Or could I attach a larger diameter piece of pvc and attach it to the 2" pvc? Do EF lenses even work with this adaptor design, or do I need to use FD lenses with an FD mount?

If you could help me out I would really appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

Mike

yes, but since its not as strong as a +10 you will need to compensate by either extending the length of the adapter to move the CO away from the DVX for its macro mode to kick in correctly, OR use a 72mm +1 or +2 close up on the DVX to bump the CO closer.

yes, but see my graphic on the page http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=571185&postcount=918 re the new placement of the CO.

Yes except for number 5. You may also use a Canon F series C, J or K focusing screen. Snodart just snagged one from ebay and we will see how that goes. The HUGE plus that these Canon screens have is that the GG side is laser etched AND its done on the back of the condenser, so its one piece of glass. And that means there is no worry of dust getting between the GG and the condenser like in the 2 piece D screen. AND this means you dont have to make the "Sandwich" as that was designed to seal up the D from dust.

You should be able to use these lenses as long as it can be adjusted manualy and doesnt rely on any mechanics from the SLR body (auto focus/auto iris). And as long as you can find its mount and it will fit on the PVC cap (if you are following my parts list). Thats why I think the FD lenses and mount is so popular (at least here anyway) because they are plentyfull, generaly inexpensive, and fully manual. But if you have some good newer lenses, try it.

Its the journey and not the destination grasshopper... :)

The CO +7 is the way to go. Yes, it is $209, but worth the money if you want a nice image that is free of chromatic aberration. Yes, it can be used in place of the 58mm +10 Macro in Ed's original design. It makes a HUGE difference using the CO +7. The issue is that it is a +7 instead of a +10 so you will probably have to move the GG farther away from the macro or add another macro. As Ed posted a page or two back, you can use a lower priced +2 macro in addition to the CO +7. The low quality of the +2 most likely won't be noticeable in your image. Using these two macros can allow you to get focus without adding the extra distance between the CO+7 and the GG. I currently use just the +7 and have added some distance between the +7 and the GG. It works perfectly, but my adapter is also pretty long. The length hasn't been a problem with the rod support or follow focus. It just looks long. Another option is to pay $119 for the Canon 500D +2 macro and use it with the CO +7. Both of these are high quality double element macros. It would cost a great deal more to use both of these, but your adapter would be short and free of abberation. Keep in mind, I'm not sure that I've seen anybody use this combination yet, but I don't see why it would not work.

I am considering looking into this macro. It is a double element hight quality +12 macro. It is only 52mm and I am still waiting for the company to respond with a price. The 52mm size could be a problem.

Thanks Ed and Snodart for the quick reply.

Ed, based on your new design (ED35 2), it doesn't appear the you need a "Cokin 72mm A Series Ring" ($10 Ebay). Is this the case? Also, because of the screen that Snodart found on ebay, you say you no longer need the "sandwich." Does this mean that I don't need to order the "49mm Clear Filters" and the "49mm-52mm Step Up rings?"

With this said, is the following a complete list of materials (minus pvc parts) that I would need to make my adaptor?

1) Canon FD 50mm 1.4 Lens $70 Ebay

2) Canon FD Mount $13 Ebay

3) Century Optics +7 diopter $200

4) Canon F series C, J or K focusing screen

6) 1 72mm to 58mm Step Down Ring

7) 1 72mm +1 or +2 macro close up OR 1 2" spacer

Two more questions. One, based on the ED35 2 diagram, its not clear to me how the focusing screen sits between the pvc cap and the female adaptor pvc? do the 2 pieces of pvc just clamp the glass in place when you screw them together? Also, its unclear to me how the male adaptor pvc and the CO +7 hold together with any integrity. Do you drill small screws through the pvc into the CO or does the CO fit into the pvc tightly?

Thanks,

Mike

Good luck to everyone on building your adapters. I'm heading out of state tomorrow on a 3 month assignment. I'll have limited access to internet so I won't be checking in much, if at all.

As for the CO+7, I added a 2" spacer to my adapter so I could get focus without using any other macro. Yes....it's a little longer than I would have liked, but it's worth it for the quality.

So have a great summer. I'll bring back lots of footage using my LowBay 35mm adapter :)

oh you're going to miss another awesome Arizona 117 degree summer!

good luck on your assingment :)
