HVX Direct to disc Shooting

Hello All
Im a NewB to the forum. I just ordered an HVX200 for my Production Company. Im did not order any P2 media for it at the moment. I would like to shoot direct to Disc on a Laptop or Desktop PC. However, unless Im shooting in a DV mode, it seems many of the platforms do not yet support this camera and all of it's modes. (We use Xpress ProHD 5.1.1, Premiere Pro 1.5 and a smattering of other tools). I see very little about shooting direct to disc. Even Panasonic's manual does not touch on this subject much. I like to shoot direct to a Laptop out in the field and do spot Editing right then and there.

Can anyone Elaborate on weather or not I can shoot Direct to Disc without a P2 Card in the Camera and If so, what do I need to do this If I dont have it already. DV Rack is the only thing Ive seen that I would assume would support this method.

Sorry to be wordy, There will be more questions later.
I appreciate any input.

I assume your a PC user?
I know Final cut Pro supports direct capture of DVCPROHD in several varieties.
Perhaps you should just get a Macbook then you wouldn't have any problems like oh .. I don't know.. Your OS(Windows) CRASHING on you in the middle of a shoot! :badputer:
heheheee... No offense to the poor PC users out there...
But i feel i have a right to comment because I used to be one...
Get a mac, you wont regret it :love4:

Avid will let you do it, but you have to be running the latest version. I think it's 5.2.2? 5.5 is due soon.

Thank you, I checked the Avid Site and saw that there are work-arounds in 5.2.2. It still does not support many of the modes and I have no clue as to how I would use the Over/Under Cranking.

Yes, I admit it, I want it all :)

To the other user, Though I have considered a Mac however Non of my Clients or Collegues currently use them. My troubles should not become something I would force them to embrace financially.

Has anyone used DV Rack?

DVC Rack for the PC is amazing, but it's still in beta-test. I don't know when it'll be ready for release, but when it is, I consider it a must-buy for PC users. It's very, very cool!

Thanks again Barry. There was a C in your DV -C-Rack. Is this something different? I was speaking of Serious Magic's DV Rack. Which I have been told IS a MUST HAVE. Unless I had a wish-slip of the Brain, I thought they just realeased a new version and it included the HVX in its arsenal of support. I had another Serious Magic Program in the past, those folks got it going on!

Comments from Mule:

I use Edius Broadcast direct to an AMD DC 4800. 1080/60. 2 Raid 0 . Works wonderful. with HVX200. . I have recorded 1 hour of video without a lockup or shutdown. The Edius Broadcast let's you transfer the Edited timeline back to the P2 card. At the present I believe this is the only edit system to allow this.
I will be purchasing DV Rack, because of the added goodies. I was lucky enough to see it in action. I cannot tell a lie.

DVC Rack is the new HVX200-compatible version. DV Rack is for DV and only DV. They have an HDV PowerPak add-on. I think they'll probably offer DVC Rack as a powerpak add-on as well, or maybe it'll be its own product, I don't really know about that yet.

Hmm, I just realized that if you messed up your spacing, DVC Rack could become DV Crack, which is about how addictive this program is... :)

I dont want to create another topic like a noob so ill ask here;

Can you just write the mxf files to the HDD as if the HDD was a P2 card from the camera? What im saying is , without FCP and any NLE's to capture, can a laptop be used as an external P2 card?

I have a Macbook Pro 2.0ghz with Final Cut Studio 5.1 but was just curious if i would have to use FCP to capture instead of just creating files on the HDD i could browse from the camera.

No. There has to be some intelligent device on the other end of the firewire cable to capture the incoming stream (which is why it needs to be a laptop or a firestore type of thing).

You can copy files from the P2 card over to a firewire hard disk, but that requires having recorded them on P2 in the first place.

Well... now with boot camp, I guess you can have the best of both worlds! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Barry: well the macbook should be able to right? i think its smart :P :)

But ive been working with .mxf files all day at work today just practicing for when the camera is back in stock, but im having probs with HD Log. It recognizes my built in iSight and mic and starts giving feedback out of my speakers and going nuts , and wont import a .mxf file.

I thought mxf files were video/audio files with tons of other data in them, appearantly they arent :( i guess im just too new to the technical aspect of that camera, but im a pro in everything else .

my question is how the hell do i get that .mxf file into my final cut pro to edit??

Barry, I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that if you connect via firewire to a laptop (such as a MacBook) you then can, or can't record direct to disk?

By the way, in that case, has the FS-100 come out yet?

If you connect via firewire to a laptop, the laptop provides the "intelligence" necessary, so yes you could record direct to disk that way.

What you can't do is just plug a firewire hard disk straight into the camera and record. Of course, you can't do that with any DV or HDV camera either, but for some reason people think the HVX should be able to. It doesn't. It can copy the contents of a card over to a hard disk (something no HDV or DV cam can do) but it can't just directly record to a hard disk unless there's some sort of intermediary intelligent interface between them. Such as a laptop, or a FireStore.

And yes, the FS-100 is available now.

Cynic821: I've developed a nice and simple workflow for bringing in .mxf files into FCP:
-If you didnt have the opportunity to import your P2 directly from the card into FCP or Avid or whatever (for example I was borrowing my girlfriends iBook that did NOT have Final Cut installed on it) to dump my p2 footage too. (and i have only 1x4GB so i had to do this often)

1. I dumped the p2 card to the laptop by:
a. setting the camera in 1394 device mode
b. mounting the p2 card onto the desktop (looks like a disk image titled "NO NAME")
c. Creating an appropritely named folder to match your footage so you wont forget what the footage is. (more important than you realize!)
d. copying the entire "CONTENTS" folder and locked "LASTCLIP.TXT" file into the folder you just created somewhere in a convient spot on the laptop (I use the desktop for it)

2. Wait for it to finish copying, then drag that folder into Toast (make sure youve got toast set to the Data tab and Mac+PC is selected) and choose File/ Save as Disc image (apple+D).
You then have a nice Master Archive .toast file that you can then burn to optical disc simply by double clicking and hitting the big red button in the bottom right OR

Simply mount onto your dekstop so FCP can ingest it as orginal P2 footage!!!!
Presto! Works like a charm!

Hope this helps some of the poor lost souls out there doing their dumping onto machines without DVCPROHD capturing capabilities. :)

Still having trouble doing a direct to disk capture from the HVX to FCP?
Make sure that you have your setting matched in the HVX to your Log and capture setting in FCP.

<interested to see how your Macbook performs>
please post your results with all the specs of your Macbook.
Thanks!

See, thats capturing! i meant writing the .mxf files directly to the drive instead of having to launch FCP at all. Not dumping the files, i mean im shooting say some scenery that i need to film for say 20 minutes. I dont want to get a 16gb P2 card, and dont want to launch FCP on my MBP. Can i treat the MBP laptop as a P2 card?
