Import Crisis! WTF? How is this possible?

Ok, so importing to a relative's new macbook pro was fine. Firewire from the camera to the macbook. Dragged the files to the desktop where they were saved, imported fine into FCP.

Now on my G5, the recent footage I shot will not import from the 4gig P2. Dragging the files from the popup P2 folder, an error says the files are copyprotected, or can be read but not rewritten. I can't remember. It happened a few times and now the computer freezes halfway thru import. I open disk utility and the drive shows up but says there are errors and cannot be verified.

This is the 2nd 4gig card I've had. The first was corrupted and would not import clips without noise. What's the deal? I'm running 10.4.3 with 2gig ram.

Any help at all would be so much appreciated.
 
Have you tried putting the card in the PCMCIA slot and trying it that way..

Also, try a different computer.. even a PC..

Make sure the clips play on the camera.. If they do, then your ok, and you know it's not the P2 error, but a computer error..
 
There's no moving parts in a P2 card, so there's no way it could make "noise", that's the computer. Do you have the P2 card Mac driver installed? Do you have enough hard drive space?

When you open Disk Utility, are you refering to the P2 card when you say "the drive shows up", casue Disk Utility can't do anything with a P2 card. It'll say there's problems cause it's not a real Mac hard drive. It's not a hard drive at all.

Righ-click on the P2 card and Get Info and check it's permissions.
 
I was referring to digital noise in the picture rather than sound from the camera or computer.

The permissions of the P2 say I can only read. As do all of the files in the Contents folder on the P2.

I have 34 availabe gigs on my harddrive. I thought the driver that came on the panasonic disk were for laptops, and I am running a G5 desktop. I know I was able to transfer these files before, but somehow it won't work now. I don't have a PCMIA slot, and yes the clips do play on the camera. I know they're there. They're just hiding from me. Can someone point me to a driver if I need to download it? I've scoured for a while now.

The exact error message when I try to drag the card's contents to my desktop or another folder is:

The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "0090C800.MXF" could not be read or written. (Error code - 36).
 
Did you try a different computer? Bring the dang card to bestbuy or something! They are cool there.. just bring your P2 software as well..

If your serious about solving the problem, do everything you can.. You shouldnt need any updated drivers that don't already come with your camera..

If they worked before and don't now, then you have a computer problem..

Try everything before re-posting..
 
Is it possible that the card was not properly ejected (dragged to trash) from the Macbook prior to physically removing it from the PCMCIA slot? If so, perhaps the files on the P2 became corrupted at that time. All the other behaviors that you saw once the card was returned to your G5 system seem to indicate an actually corrupted file on the card. If you try another card or if you format the card and it performs correctly with the G5, then this might be the cause.

Not true. Disk Utility recognizes a P2 as a drive and can make a disk image of it. In fact, the latest from Apple HQ is to make a disk image of your P2 for ingest. You're less likely to have corrupt files.


Oh, this is a REAL long shot... Is it possible that the PROTECT switch is tripped on the P2 card? I wouldn't think this would have an effect on the ingest process, but it might.
