Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

Wow, Try this.

Wow, Try this.

I was toying around with the parts I got from ebay and Lowes. I have a nikon D focus screen, but I am still waiting on the step up rings. In the mean time I tried something out of curiousity, and was surpised by the results which I will post later. I used SCOTCH TAPE as my focusing screen, and it does a pretty good job. I had to used letter box mode to hide the seams, but it work out nicely. Somebody try this and tell me what you think.

I got an AOL spam offer in the mail a couple of months ago. It was with the frosted case. I threw it in the trash as usual. Then I read about the cases being used as GG's and thought I would try it. I got another piece of AOL spam a couple of days ago and got pretty excited. What do you know, it was the first time AOL has ever spammed me with a wooden case! I threw it in the trash as usual.

The original Ed35 is for sale

The original Ed35 is for sale

I am selling my original Ed35 Version 1.5 Yes, this is the original adapter that I started this thread with.

And it has some improvements- hence the 1.5. A few months ago I found a focusing screen made by Canon that had the matte side ground ON the condenser lens. The same concept as the D screen but without the hassle of getting dust between the condenser and screen. One glass unit that is very sharp. So I removed my D screen and replaced it with this new Canon screen, and was very impressed.

This also meant I didn’t need to use two 49mm UV lenses to sandwich in the screen- preventing dust. Less glass to see through which can soften the image. With the Canon screen, if you get dust in, a quick shot of compressed air in the front removes it fast.

Since I built a second version of this, I simply don’t need two adapters. That is why I have decided to sell this unit WITH the Canon F1.4 50mm lens that works so well with these projects. You will get the adapter and the f1.4 Canon FD lens and a rubber lens hood for $250 plus S/H. It will be offered to the first serious reply I get. U.S. funds only and I dont take paypal-sorry. Check or money order.

Before people start messaging me about buying it- please be aware of a few things first: this unit was made for the DVX100A or 100B. The original 100 cant focus close enough to work properly, I am sorry. Also note that the unit is “calibrated” to work on the stock DVX lens threads without a UV protector. This means you need to remove your UV lens when using this adapter.

This was done because different UV protectors have different thread lengths. Hoya, Tiffen, Schneider; they all have different lengths, so that when the adapter is screwed on the focusing screen can be slightly off angle. You of course can keep your UV lens on and attach the adapter, then open it up and re-adjust the focusing screen to be level with the DVX’s frame. But that adjustment would have to be done by you.

And yes you need to flip the image in post, as it is recorded upside down. Also keep in mind that this started out as a prototype- so there are some very slight blemishes and seams visible. Nothing that affects the operation, but it was made by hand after all :)

Below you will find a link to some still frames from a recent video test I shot with the adapter. These are raw frame grabs from Vegas (after flipping it right-side up). No other adjustments were made to the video. You will also find a link to the video (48 mb). Its nothing special, just some scenes from work, both outdoors and in-doors.

I love this adapter as it was my first, and many long hours were spent over it refining the design. But I simply don’t need two of them. Thanks for checking it out and to those of you still working on your own- keep up the good work, it will be worth it. Ed

Wow Ed. I thought your adapter would end up in some sort of hall of fame. I'm dying to know more about the canon focusing screen! Is it a new find, or did I miss a post? Anyway, glad to "see" you back around.

good job on that adapter. one quick question, what do i need to do (if its possible) to make this adapter or one like it work on the og DVX100...since you said there were focusing problems with it.

Well no called from the smithsonian yet- so I figured, it would do more good being used on someones camera than to be sitting on my desk at work.

And it can work on the original 100, you would have to add some empty 72mm spacers between the adapter and your DVX front threads to get it farther away from the orig 100s limited macro ability.

16x9 ?

16x9 ?

I may have missed this topic, I am interested to know when using these lenses if it is 16x9 or a 4x3 aspect ratio? and if it is 4x3 do you fix that in post. Please help me out with the details.

nitsudpook,
The adapter is for using 35mm film lenses on your DVX or other camcorder to achieve a shallow depth of field. The aspect ratio is the same as whatever mode your shooting with in camera.

can anyone tell me the page number of the newest/best instructions of where Edweirdo explains how to build his 35mm adaptor model? I've been reading so many threads on this topic that I just can't take it anymore.

Thanks,

Mike

Ed, thanks for the continued contributions on all of this. Like snodart said, I'm DYING to know what the Canon focus screen is. Everyone's looking for the perfect screen, and if Canon makes one that is clear matte then that could help a lot of people. If you could clue us in I'm sure everyone would be most appreciative. Thanks Ed. :D

MikeQuill, I wish I could help you. The info is pretty much scattered all over the place. There isn't really any way but to dig. I'm sure people are getting tired of hearing me carry on about my plan to create a DVD adapter guide, but this is the very reason I want to do it. To build my first adapter, I pretty much had to read this thread as if it were a book (and it is a book).

The adapter as nothing to do with aspect ratio

35mm lenses are meant to hit 35mm film which is 36mm x 24mm , This is an aspect ratio of 3:2. but if you wish to use 16:9 in camera, then you zoom in until the sides fill the frame, and thus you are not using a small portion of the top of the gg and the bottom of the gg. you can also record 4:3 by zooming in.

but to say the 35mm adapter has nothing to do with aspect ratio is wrong, because is your trying to keep the same feild of view, it very much does.

Snodart- I am certainly not sick of your vibrating screen plans- have you shot any footage with your design yet? There are sooo many posts I cant seem to find one.

MikQuill- I'm not sure where it is, but someone in this thread put all the steps together in a PDF which helps put it in perspective. That along with Marelenes videos should be a good start. Use the search this thread at the top of the forum.

ovjamaica- the Canon screen was a fluke its weird :) I cannot find any info on this screen, but it is just like the D screen without the hassle of worrying about dust getting inside. Just imagine a condenser with one side ground down. The only difference is that it is about 5mm smaller in width and height. Here is some info I think will help:

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/SLRs/ae1pgrm/html/index7.htm

I'm 99.9% sure its called the Canon AE-1 Focusing Screen Type C. If you look on ebay or call around to camera stores make sure its for the A series Canon SLRs. Hope this helps :)

Thanks Ed. I posted some footage somewhere...? It was of the old design and without the CO +7 though. I am shooting my hero-fest entry with the newer vibrating adapter... so that will be it's big debut. So far, I am very happy with how the footage looks. There are a few issues that I will need to fix. One being that in a few of the shots there is a touch of movement along the Z axis of the focusing screen. It caused at slight fuzz/blur in the very corner of a few shots. It isn't very noticeable, but I won't stand for it. This is easily fixed by using 3 or 4 syringes instead of only 2. We also did not use any ND filters when shooting outside so I had to crank the F-stop way down. There is a little grain in these shots (vibrating grain that is), but it is nothing compared to the footage when the adapter was not vibrating. Anyway, the footage will be up after the 30th and once the voting begins. Once I'm am done with hero-fest, I will be diving right into the DIY vibrating adapter DVD (with bonus info about DOF, adapters in general, etc.). I can't wait!
