I have read this article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC#Refresh_rate

Technical Details - Refresh rate & colour encoding.

can anyone explain this in more simple terms, or link me to a more simple explanation.

also.. "the 3.58 MHz color carrier may beat with the sound carrier to produce a dot pattern on the screen."

what is this dot pattern?

basically i am just trying to figure out why (technicaly and historically) 60 hz changed to 59.94 hz, and 30fps to 29.97fps and so on.

the two signals interfered with each other if they happened to synch at some point, i guess. kinda like resonance. i suppose that caused a Dot pattern? if one runs on an "off beat" freaquency, perhaps they dont interfere with eachothter.

it kinda explains it in what youwrote. but sometimes you need ot hear it back in different words for it to be clear.

When they added color, more information was needed to be sent and rather than increase the bandwidth, the squeezed in the info into the existing signal.

Analog is not just sending a stream of bitmaps to the televisions, so it wasn't just a matter of sending color images.
